Evening all.

I do a lot of motorway driving and regularly see vehicles parked on the hard shoulder with there front ends caved in. Last week I saw a BT van with the bonnet pushed up towards the windscreen, it looked like it had ran into the back of a truck and the front had gone under. The same last week on an Avensis.

I guess the truck scenario is plausible, but surely the driver would feel it? If not and they drive off, I would at least have thought other drivers would have indicated for the driver to stop?

Anyone shed any light on this for me?

Cheers

Simon

Heavily loaded HGVs will not feel the impact and hence drive onward.

Perhaps they either hit the barrier or the other vehicle has already been recovered/driven off after exchanging details.

Maybe the other vehicle had already been removed by their insureres transporter?

I know what you mean, i've seen a lot of them too, but not only will there be some drivers not feeling it (especially if it hits whilst still actually braking), but i'd also say after swapping details, the truck driver probably carries on, and the car/van is left for 3 hours waiting for recovery.

Even an unloaded HGV with brakes on will have trouble feeling the impact from a car or van.

Had a chat with a mobile crane driver about this, he said it has happened several times, bright yellow crane and people still stuff into the back in traffic.

Each time he didn't know or feel it. Once it was very slow moving traffic and this middle aged woman was running alongside his crane screaming at him to stop. He did and she had a right go at him for driving off and leaving her TT in a steaming mess a hundred metres back.

Cheers, makes total sense as I have never seen Highways Agency a traffic jam or emergency services at the scene, just someone waiting on the hard shoulder.
