So the boxster s has to go, the 12yr old 2.8 A4 quattro estate can't be trusted at 140k miles (her opinion, not mine!) so we're looking for a family freindly car (probably estate?) for the region of £10kish....it needs to keep me smiling behind the wheel, and look the part...where do i start? Thanks for you advice.

Legacy/Forester/Impreza (listed in order of size if that matters)

Something like this is well within your budget:

Incredibal and rapid response, thanks! Age is an issue with the current audi, so would need to be 04 onwards....mpg is a consideration (ish) but nowhere near top of the list, something i can drive with pride and the mrs can drive without feeling like a boy racer. Thanks so much for everything you've offered so far, completely useful!

Got to be the C32 Mercedes, an absolute looker of a car, and from everything I hear a hell of a drive too. Go for the C32, drive it like it's a C63...
