We should be picking up a new Polo in a few months and just noticed that the 1st service is not until 10k miles or 2 years! This seems a little excessive to me for I would expect a lube service at 600 miles or so to cater for bedding in of the engine.

As I have never had a new car before, can you tell me if this is the norm or would the average PH member decide to complete an oil change outside the standard service interval, if only for peace of mind?

The last 5 new cars I've had have been 10k or 1 years for the first service.

my new BMW was 18k (or 2 years me thinks) - having already done 50k in 15 months it's only had 2 services!?!

as it's a company car i'm happy to follow what the service indicator says! though I have checked the oil level a couple of times, I've only needed to put in a litre once. pretty amazing when you compare it to older cars

Normal these days, bar some specialist and exotic stuff.
What you might do probably depends upon how long you intend to keep it.
Extra oil changes can't hurt and may help engine life but if you're not intending to keep it for a long while it is arguable whether it would increase trade in value.
Do note the 10K miles though.
Me, because we keep cars for many years, I've always changed the oil and filter at about 1K miles and at half stated intervals.

I suppose I am so used to running new bikes the idea of leaving a new car this long bothers me, as I understand that although service intervals on bikes are going up in modern times, still no manufacturer will exclude a bedding in service.

Are any engines 'pre run in' these days?
