A friend of mine is a cyclist in London, and a few months ago, he got sick of nearly being run over all the time and bought himself a Contour HD 1080p ( http://www.contour-hd.co.uk/contourhd-1080p.html ).

He has since posted one or two videos to youtube and forwarded them to the Met who have been round and had a word with the drivers in question.

Been thinking from then really, plus the thread started about idiots behaving poorly when you try and overtake them - what's everyone's viewpoint on using one in car?

Not necessarily for dobbing people in when they're idiots or do something dangerous, but more to cover yourself (and your NCB!) in the event of something happening.

I know you can get dedicated video cameras which continuously record the last 30 seconds of motion and will also activate if your car is broken into etc., but this is more for on the move recording.

I personally really like the idea.

What do you lot think and can you think of any further advantages or disadvantages with using one.

I use one on track for after-session laughs and refining my lines but wouldn't use it on road. I guess if you had a decent mount it would be OK, I wouldn't want it because I'd worry it would encourage me to act like an idiot just to get decent footage, bit like I did when we filmed my Stag in the snow.

ETA: to get footage of cars you've overtaken you'd need a rear-facing one...you'll end up with them all round the car...

The more and more idiots I meet on the roads and in particular on roundabouts the more I think it would be a good idea to have a recorder in the car,

It seams now a days no one will accept responsibility for there own actions and will lie in order to get a payout in their favour and video evidence could save you a lot of hassle following an accident.

.....must get one of those for the cab and take some footage of the stupidity that I see on a regular basis.....more than several times a day that some some cyclists display....I wonder if 'ol bill would take an interest.....doubtful.

To be honest the standard of driving whether it be two wheeled or four wheeled is more than piss poor in London......I am sick and tired of the selfish and bad mannered people that are on the roads.

Cyclists are some of the worst people on the roads - they are without a doubt the most vulnerable road users, because at least motorcyclists can accelerate away from danger, but they act like they are in some golden bubble and that everyone will fawn over them and move out of their way. A lot of them don't seem to understand that they aren't super-priviledged road users, they are just regular people on bikes. Yes, to avoid accidents, motorists should give them a wide berth etc, always be looking out for them especially at junctions and so forth, but when they start doing stupid things like running red lights, changing lane on a whim without signalling or 2 or more riding side by side at barely 20mph holding up loads of traffic it makes you wonder what these people are thinking!

This is him:

http://www.youtube.com/user/JameyCam

He had this to say too: "As expensive as the Contour is I do feel a lot better knowing I'm recording journeys. And it makes me behave a bit better too as I don't want to jeopardise anything if something suddenly happened right now, kinda thing."

This rings true to me too - if anything did happen while I was driving, it would have the affect of making me behave as I'm not just recording the road, I'm recording me too!

I take my hat off to him, given the some of the situations there he shows amazing restraint!!

Yes he is an utter wker but I can't help thinking so is the bloke taking the video. Here's another one with him telling some guy not to use his phone while driving.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOPeOx-fhOA&NR=...

Surely it doesn't have anything to do with him & it is between the driver, the police & the magistrates. His attitude towards the driver is terrible & I think he is out simply looking for trouble.

I am not defending the van driver & I would not react like him if I was confronted by this videoing cyclist, however, I wouldn't enjoy him talking to me like he did to the driver in that video. I think he is very lucky that he hasn't picked on the wrong person yet.

Yeah I just saw that one, and I winced at what he did. He may have the moral right to ask the driver to stop using the phone, but the manner in which he did it suggested that he thinks he's a bit of a policeman, which of course he probably isn't. I'd only ever say something like that if the driver was driving like a pillock.

I have considered this for a while now.....

....purely for this reason. I've lost count of the number of times I have had to take evasive action to avoid an accident, and I know that had there been a collision, in absence of independant witnesses, it probably would have been left at 50:50.

I'd quite like a system that contiually records, and then overwipes unless a 'save' button is pressed, somthing like this:

Anyone know of such a system cheap enough for an indiviual to purchase? rather than most of these type of systems which seem to be targeted at fleet managers.

I have one that does exactly that. Bought it for the trackcar, but got an extra camera for the car and just plug the DVR in. Its in all the time and records sound too and overlaps on a 5hr loop.

So when the rozzer was telling me in my window that I HAD jumped the red light, I smugly said give me the ticket and that I would see him in court.
Proved he was a liar. Very satisfying.

Got this one....
