This is a boring post but need to buy a seven seater 4x4 in a hurry and the choice is either a Q7 3.0 tdi an R design XC90 or Discovery 4 3.0 V6 HSE. In terms of value the XC90 looks dramatically the best value but maybe someone has some words of wisdom. Need to decide in the next couple of days so appreciate any comments.

I'd go for the XC90 or Disco. No idea how they drive, but styling-wise I really don't like the Q7.

The q7 is bigger I belive and it will hold it's value better than the others . Actually if you are ferrying a familly I wouldn't go for nothing else than the q7

It's a real squeeze to get into the third row of seats on the Q7 and the XC90 and Disco are both more roomy in that respect. The Q7 seems to have a lot of its length from the drivers seat forward. In terms of residuals I think you are right as the XC90 is quite aged and probably about to be replaced.

XC90 for me...in fact I am waiting delivery of my rdesign...you can carry 7 people with space for a pram etc..I think its going to be replaced in 2012. It drives like a car and hold their value well...an example is I saw an 04 (not main dealer) for £14k not bad for a £35k car after 6 years.

A friend of mine got a top spec <6 month old one for (IIRC) £22k from a main dealer....

If it was a toss up between a used XC90 or D3 it'd be a very close run thing, but the D4 has (by all accounts - not driven one) upped the game substantially.

The Q7 is a distant 3rd, despite (or possibly because ofscratchchin) the imagine.

Does really depend on if you want to go offroad or not really.

why do you want a big SUV? Whats wrong with an s-max? They are cheaper, more room inside, still meant to be great to drive, or there is even big estates. I really don't understand the obsession with SUV's

X5 or Discovery.

XC90 is cheaply finished (the verdict of two of my mates who each own one).

Q7 is an ugly abomination.

He might want a 4x4. Whether he needs a 4x4 or not is not that relevant as he's got to be happy with his purchase.

OP - if buying new and going offroad at all, I'd find it difficult to look beyond the Disco4. The XC90 is nearing the end of its life in the current incarnation and the Q7 is just foul wink

Because they're st (Yes, we have one). You're comparing a Mondeo with a (admittedly slower and less efficient) Jag.

Disco is roomier than XC90 in the third row. Volvo themselves state that 3rd row is for passengers up to 5'6" only, so if you want to put adults/big teenagers back there then it's the Disco. You will get bigger discounts on an xc90 (£6-7k off) but an auto will be better than a manual because of the foot-operated parking brake.
