Why 3 years before an MOT inspection?
Discussion
I'm talking about brand new vehicles, and why is it deemed ok not to have a current MOT for 3 years?
The reason i ask is because of possible mileage fraud, a car could rack up nearly 100,000 miles before a first 3rd year MOT.Since 2006 all MOT information including mileage goes to the VOSA database making it alot more difficult to make drastic mileage cuts. Service history can 'prove' the first 3 years mileage but this service infomation is not so difficult to replicate, hence leaving a clocking potential.
I honestly would not mind if MOT testing was done yearly, as 1,2 or 3 years of heavy mileage use can easily cause safety concerns, such as brakes, suspension and steering components.Even simple things like bulbs can fail at any time, also tyres are a major safety concern.
When buying a quality 3 year old used car with warranty mileage, are we really getting this?

I think its probably got a lot to do with cars not being built to last and the mot would show this up. Car companies would have to replace non consumables under warranty. I agree that brake pads and tyres would wear out while used as a company car but would have thought that the company would be responsible for servicing.
I believe the 3 year MOT law was instigated many many years ago when cars were much simpler and in many cases after 3 years needed serious attention or were downright dangerous.
The modern car does not need an MOT until 5 years or 100k, whichever sooner.
The average car thats done 36k after 3 years does not need an MOT....although garages see them as as a good revenue stream...
Its an old law that needs updating...

Disagree.
Some people will just run their cars into the ground, regardless whether they have a warranty or not. 3 years and 100k later, a car that hasn't had a service will be in a very poor state, especially the brakes.
All cars should have an MOT on a yearly basis regardless how old they are. Our MOT should also be alot stricter imo.
