Epic European road trip planning
Discussion
I am planning an epic road trip around europe later this month.
Can anyone give suggestions for piston head type roads and destinations that should be travelled too ?
I was thinking along the lines of the Stelvio pass, Nurnbergring etc.
Has anyone enjoyed any particularly fine roadtrip blogs that they can share with me ?
I have 3 weeks to play with, and planning on taking a tent to maximise petrol expenditure.

In brief I did:
- ferry to Bilbao
- over the Pyrenees
- Millau viaduct
- Mt Ventoux and the Route Napoleon
- Monaco
- Italy/supercar valley
- Italian Alps - Stelvio and a number of other passes
- Swiss alps and through Switzerland
- Mulhouse to the Schlumpf collection
- Reims
- Calais
Took two weeks, around 3,000 miles. With three weeks I'd spend a bit more time in the south of France (Tol du Corini around Monaco for example) and would have headed north from Switzerland into the black forrest/autoroute and then the 'Ring.
To be honest there are so many great roads in Europe you don't really need to specifically seek them out. Just get an idea of what you want to do/see and plan the route on the day.

Avoid the Stelvio - it packed with bikers and campervans this time of year and is probably the most over rated road in Europe. Just get a rough idea of where you would like to stay for half the nights you plan to be away for, then just find a campsite at the end of each day when you're tired of driving. I'm just back and the best road was the San Bernadino closely followed by the Col de Torini, but there are hundreds of passes in Italy/Switzerland/France - my Tom Tom picked out "Mountain Passes" as places of interest so it was easy to find the good roads...
I've just been on my second roadtrip around Europe. More for my own memories (and family wanting to see what we got up to), I wrote this blog for each of our trips. We just looked at Google Maps to see what roads looked like might be fun, and aimed for them (adding in the usual Stelvio, San Bernadino, Col de Turini etc.).
We covered a fair bit of mileage in the time we were away - having 3 weeks should give you plenty of road choice to cover.

Car will be Lexus IS300.
Sounds like your better off going to a place you like and just finding some roads on route / rather than going for the good roads if that makes sense. Ideas:
Munich / Austria / Italy via Bologna/Modena - south Amalfi Coast etc / Back via Alps / Switzerland (Davos/Zurich) Home.
I might have something you will be interested in mate. Have a look on Facebook at the group Help for Heroes Road Trip 2010. There are a few spaces and will be mostly camping over a weeks period.
23rd August - will see 16 vehicles meet up in Dover to travel to Elmpt in Germany, via France, Belgium and Holland.
The evening will be a social gathering in Elmpt Station military camp, with free accommodation and cheap beer.
24th August - will see the event start properly at 1200hrs with approx 34 vehicles and taking in the SPA racetrack for a visit before arriving at the Nurburgring for the days Tourist session, also visits to the museum and their other facilities. We'll be camping on the 'rings campsite that night.
25th August - we will depart Nurburg village for the Bavarian Alps, paying a visit to the Thermal Baths in Schwangau with King Ludwig III's castle (featured in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) towering above us from the outside spa.
We will then travel to Mittenwald near Garmisch on the German/Austrian border and set up camp for 2 nights.
26th August - will see us travel through Austria and into Northern Italy and the Stelvio Pass where we'll take Brunch at its summit. We will then head back into Austria where we will travel across the Glossgockener (sorry spelling may be off here) Pass, lots of companies use this Pass for Altitude testing their new cars, the latest being the new Ford Focus. We will then return to Mittenwald via some very nice B-Roads.
27th August - we return to Elmpt Station via Nuremburg and the Nurburgring where there is an event taking place. Once arriving back in Elmpt there's an end of trip party all planned along with a decent raffle of items thats been donated to the cause.
28th August - sees everyone head their own ways, the 16 vehicles travelling back to the UK will probably travel together.
Hope this wets your appetite and look forward to hearing from you. PM if you want more info.
This is open for the next 5 days to anyone as names are required to stay on the Military camp in Germany!!
