Driving about using arm signals, any legal issues?

Right. Last night the hazard lights on my 2004 MG ZR decided to take a hissy fit and stay on perminantly and flash about like a raving tard.
So I've taken out the fuse for the hazard lights and have been using arm signals. Have not had any problems with police.

No idea if it will get fixed, the car is a total lemon. Is it alright to drive about (short journeys) If i'm using clear arm signals. All other lights working fine?

Not sure on the legality of it but the big problem I see is other drivers not having a clue what you're doing.

I shouldn't think there's many people out there that understand hand signals. (apart from the 'coffee bean shake' and the V's...)

Thats another problem, the "turning left signal" confuses people and folk just seem to get pissed off. didn't have any problems driving through town admitedly...

It wouldn't pass an mot so I'm going for unroadworthy.

That being the case if you had an accident and it was proved that you knew the indicators were not working could be grounds to refuse payment.

What would be the scenario if I drove with the hazards on? Daft I know but occasionally they don't go off and the indicators work...

True, just don't want to be pushing any limits on legality, only a new driver afterall.

Bring it to the local auto-electrician, may be a very simple cheap fix - ask him to quote for repair before carrying it out. You'll end up paying him for his time to diagnose the issue either way though.

give it a few months and you'll find that you won't have to bother with any signals

Been there before when this happened. including MG/Rover specialists. Nada appears on diagnostics

I suspect this is either the hazard switch (which indicators usually pass through) or the relay.

Just do what most seem to do, don't bother to signal, let them guess where your going.

As one driver apparantly said "Why do I need to signal, I know where I'm going"..........

Well if I see your Volvo I'll give the PH signal, crossed arms and grinning like a tard!
out at the moment picking my parents up from the pub and put the fuse back in as the hazard light 'light' wasn't coming on and it's been fine... For now.

Its a MK1 sadly, everyone on themgzr.co.uk has been suggesting this before realising it's a mk1!

I think the legality of the lights not working is an issue rather than you using hand signals which is quite acceptable in a car so old that it does not have or require any indicators.

In any case, most of Joe public would not have a clue what you mean if you were using the correct circular motion of your arm to signal left out of the drivers window

I suggest painting it black, if it isn't already, and putting a little yellow light on top with the word "taxi" on it.

Then come down to London and drive around. No one will expect to see any indicators being used.
