Depends if you want Front, Rear or All wheel drive.
www.LetsTorqueBhp.com says:
So the X-Type is quicker off the line and up to the speed limit
. Also it grips like mad around the corners.
Also, the permanent (60:40 rear-wheel biased) AWD system found in the earler cars is excellent in snow and wet conditions.
Something else to consider - Pick a milage, age and specification and compare the cost of a BMW 330 and an X-Type 3.0. Choose the X and you could buy a reasonable Mk1 MX-5 with the change!
For me, the 3.0 X-Type is massive value for money but be warned, PH says that BMWs are ultimate driving machines and X-Types are "Just a Mondeo".

This man speaks the truth. I've a lovely MX5 and the stupendous value of the X Type means that one will most likely join the stable in the next year or so.OP, I didnt answer most of your question - In terms of running costs:
I imagine that the BMW would be the most expensive - especially those big low profile tyres. The 17" Pirelli P-Zeros on my X-Type are £90-100 a corner. Some X-Types have 16s which will be cheaper still.
If you stick with main dealers, the X-Type will be more expensive than the Mondeo to run. However I use a Jag specialist which works out quite cheap. For things like brake pads/discs I believe the Mondeo parts fit straight on, again saving costs.
MPG on my 3.0 X-Type is 27MPG Average for my commute (mainly stop-start queues with a few clear roads mixed in). On a run down south, using cruise control at a steady 70 mph I can get 32+ MPG. I would imagine that the Ford and BMW may be slightly better on fuel as the Jag AWD system will sap some power. The Auto X-Types are a bit slower and heavier on fuel than the Manual ones too.

Isn't the ST220 4wd?
I'm pretty sure the ST220 is just FWD (But happy to be proven wrong)

The Mazda 6 MPS thingys are 4wd though aren't they?

^^ My friend barely averaged 23/24MPG (touched 30MPG on a careful run) in his ST220.
Admittedly it had a K&N air filter, s/s exhaust and a remap; it was still pretty poor...
My barely run in 220 does 24-29 MPG with ease, if I drove carefully could easily get over 30MPG but why buy a 3L V6 if fuel economy is an issue?Admittedly it had a K&N air filter, s/s exhaust and a remap; it was still pretty poor...

Remap on an ST220? That must have done sweet FA Admittedly it had a K&N air filter, s/s exhaust and a remap; it was still pretty poor...

But in my eyes, you don't buy a car like an ST220, spend money getting it to go faster and then moan about economy... or is that just me..?

I went out and bought a Jaaaaag X-type 3.0 SE this morning. Lovely manual box, great handling, nice'n'clear dash layout and not at all disappointing after my E34 540i.
Mine's a 2002 with a good service history, no advisories on the last 3 MoTs and has 64k on it. Two small scratches I will get seen to are the only faults. Bought from a dealer so paid a bit more than private but at least I have recourse.

330 gets my very biased vote. Mine has been ultra reliable (now I've said that it's blatently going to implode tonight), only thing to go has been the front bushes which is a common problem, a wheel bearing and a battery due to age. Good on petrol too, You can easily coax 35mpg out of it on a long run, getting nearer the 40 side too.

ditto (except wheel bearing)also if you get it in m sport then you get the 255 rear wheels then with a good launch the 330 can be very quick from a stand still, do a similar launch on the 220 and you will just be spinning the front wheels.
the 220s tend to be very well equipped though, and imo much better than the 330 in that sense
both offer similar performance on the move, but generally the 330 is considered to just about have the edge
330 engine really is a peach. and is great for lazy driving with loads of low down grunt but drive it hard and you start to cover more ground than you would expect.
im sure the st220 lump is also great, but i havnt driven one so cant comment although it will never match the 330's mpg. thanks to duratec its a more rev happy engine

ks does that get an extra 30bhp from it.
