Worth getting another car?
Discussion
I am due to start a new job next month, which will involve a 30 mile commute (about 20 mile of which on dual/motorway).
My current job I take the train, and so my car was not really chosen for it's fuel economy/cheapness of running (156 v6).
So is it worth me getting a cheap 1.4 runaround in addition to keeping my current car? I get at the moment about 20 around town, 34 on a motorway.
Obviously having a second car means another vehicle to insure, maintain etc but with fuel going up would it be a more sensible long term option? And if so, what car?
And no I am not getting rid of the Alfa

Wouldnt have thought it was worth it, you have to buy another car, tax it, insure it and you are already doing 34 mpg on the dual carriageway - assuming you pick up a beater for 1k, tax and insurance is going to cost up to another 500 quid. heres some fag packet maths. commute will be 300 miles per week, which at 30mpg is going to cost you about £51. at 45mpg in your new shed, that will be about £34. so saving 17 pounds per week, your 1500 quid outlay is going to take 88 weeks to pay off.
Plus your alfa will probably cause more problems if only used occasionally assuming that you keep it too.
Of course if you fancy a new car go for it!
