Deeply shocked

There I was enjoying a Sunday drive from Stonehaven to Banchory yesterday, rounded a bend in our lovely country side to be confronted with a "slow" car in front of me.

It quickly became apparant that he was behind 2 other "Slow" cars who were behind a bloody camper van, or SUV what ever the caravan fraternity call them.

Sod this I thought, not many passing places on that road, and when an opportunity did arrive, you guessed it, cars coming the other way.

I am thinking, "Miles and miles of 35 mph will really excite me today"..........

Then without warning, the camper jobbie pulled over to let us 4 drivers pass. A friendly wave, quick flash of the hazards as I passed, then he pulled back out to carry on.

Well done that man, I do hope you enjoy your weekend.

A tractor did the same for myself and a load of other cars behind it this weekend in North Wales.

Now that is a rarity.

Hopefully we will continue to be shocked by such behaviour in future.

I like it in Scotland where there are signs saying things like "Slow driving causes frustration and accidents, please pull over in passing spaces to let faster traffic past".

Dare I say it but the Scots have a much more civilised way of doing these things...

I did just this last Thursday whislt on holiday. I was on a stretch of bendy road I didn't know, with the wee man in the car. We were in no hurry, and hardly got above 40.

A few miles down the road, someone who clearly knew the road was up my rear, so as soon as possible I pulled over to let them past. Shame I never got a thanks.

In the republic of Ireland , many drivers pull into the left while driving to let you by. It is shocking when it happens but also really convenient. For clarification at the sides of most bigger roads there is a hard shoulder type lane which they move into. Brilliant.

Plenty of instances where someone will move as far over to the left as possible and stick their indicator on whilst slowing, too. So the built-up queue of cars can overtake more easily.

Brilliant. Until you come across someone who has parked on the 'hard shoulder'.

On a total side note, I bought one of my Westfields from Banchory so I used that very road to test drive it. Corking little stretch of tarmac. I think I'd have bought any performance car after a test drive down there (unless camper-vans were invovled of course).

In my experience the likelihood of this sort of considerate behaviour is pretty much directly proportional to your distance away from London...

It's also worth pointing out that truck and tractor drivers tend to be pretty good at this. It's regular car monospeeders and caravaners who tend to be worse.

Maybe he sped up on the straights? I would expect that's the reason.

You're bloody lucky! Normally the first couple of cars behind the slow vehicle just stop as well - and then when they do set off its rarely much quicker than the original speed.

I always try to thank tractor drivers/ digger drivers etc when they pull over.

Hmm, but when a car wants to get past you (Its quite obvious when this is) and puts on its right indicator to pull out then you accelerate its abit stupid. If I'm going to be overtaken I'll usually slow down slightly to make it easier/shorter.

Hmm, but when a car wants to get past you (Its quite obvious when this is) and puts on its right indicator to pull out then you accelerate its abit stupid. If I'm going to be overtaken I'll usually slow down slightly to make it easier/shorter.

Agree, had an idiot driver couple yrs ago desperate to overtake, right on my tail etc (I was doing 50mph average on a B road) eventually he decided to overtake when approaching sharp bend, I actually braked to allow the space for him before the bend (just as a van was coming round the bend from the other way) I was with my sales manager who told me I shouldn't have breaked and shouldn't have let me in, when I informed her in no uncertain terms that I was glad he was not on my tail and what if it was a bike coming the opposite way, I didn't want to be responsible for the death of an innocent rider!! She didn't argue back.
