Not the usual rant but close. The wife has gone out to dinner with work colleagues tonight, so I thought I'd pop along to the local chippy. Inside an old lady was telling everyone how she had found out that her MoT had expired 4 months ago, she went on to say that it was everyone elses fault as no-one had told her and that it should run out at the same time as tax. I for one am glad that the roads are no doubt littered with similarly clueless OAPs all enjoying insurance premiums you can pay with the change down the back of the sofa.

She has a (small) point. HMRC will remind you that tax is due or god forbid not paid. Council send rude letters every year to tell me that I have not filled the Registered voters form in, not that it has changed. They will send me a reminder that my car taxis due...
Does not seem out of the way that someone dozy twot could setup a reminder system whether email or post based.
I also missed my MOT, but only by 2 weeks and sorted quickly once I realised. I admit that was my fault by the way.

My 85 year old Grandmother forgot to tax her car for five months after it was due; I noticed when I borrowed the car and got it sorted ASAP.
She actually had the reminder filed away in her "Things that I need to ask Sally - my Mum, her Daughter - what they are" drawer.
Silly old woman, lovely though. She didn't try to blame anyone else and back paid it with no qualms.

Well I'm a mid 30's male and I still went for 3 months without an MOT.
I only noticed when doing the online bit for road tax and it said there was a problem with the MOT. Being male I blamed the stupid website then started to think about it. Phoned the girlfriend at work and asked where the MOT certificate was because it's not in the car folder, she said it must be somewhere else.
Hours of searching later I called the garage where it had a £500 service the week before and asked if they could tell me when it was last MOT'd and they checked the computer and said "we haven't done that car for you yet". I then went white and had a small panic attack and asked when was the soonest they could take the car in, which being an understanding garage they did the next day.
You don't have to be old to forget things.

Old folks shouldn't all be tarred with the same brush.
While it is true that many become more careful [slower] as they age, there are many exceptions. An old Pal of mine, Gerry, died at 77 driving, everywhere safe to do so, at 100mph.
