Bosozoku

I'm sure the majority of people on here will probably hate this style but I just thought I'd start a thread to see if anyone had any information as it's not that easy to find out about it.
The thing that sparked it off is I've seen a few pictures of this knocking about, apparently it's in London at the moment:






As far as I can see there are three main areas:
the bikes:

It looks like it started off as a gang thing, there's quite a few pictures of people wearing Tokkō-fuku (Kamakazi pilot suites) and surgical masks.
if you've ever seen "Black Rain" the gang that kills Andy Garcia are bosozoku and they crop up all the time in Manga films

The Vans:
this is a pretty typical example from Speedhunters http://speedhunters.com/archive/2010/01/07/car-fea...
I've seen quite a few pictures with airbrushing on the back:

I'm not sure how they connect to the bikes, hopefully someone else will be able to fill that bit in.

The Cars:
Everyone has probably seen a picture of these at one point, they apparently came from the Silhouette racers of the 80's

I did post this in the other thread on this, but rather than make you hunt for it, i'll explain it as best i can

IIRC the bosozuku are youth gangs, wannabe yakuza, and they roam around japan at night on their bikes(in their cars etc) generally being a nuisance, or at least this is how they started. If this isnt what you wanted to know, then just ignore me

Ah thanks, I never saw that post I knew they were a nuisance as I've seen articles on Police crackdowns etc, also those unsilenced exhausts must be pretty loud when there's a group of them.
With regards to the Styling, are the body kits all one offs? I assume with the cars they are but the vans look like they could be some modular kit where it's all pieced together in different configurations, there's a hell of a lot of work in them whatever it is. The fairings on the motorbikes are also quite strange looking. The whole movement is quite odd but I find it really interesting.

I have to admit to quite liking some of the cars. They're so ridiculous they're funny.

I've never really understood what motivates the owners though. Are they meant to be a light hearted take on modified cars? Are there performance mods too or are they just for looking at?

The Shilouette style was known as GranChan (Grand Champion). I prefer it to the Yankee or Bosozoku style, there more of a nod to racing...

Quite a lot of them have externally mounted oil coolers and intercoolers, as to whether they are tuned I'm not sure, I was hoping there might be someone that knows, are there any members based in Japan on here that could shed any light? To be honest I think they're quite cool compared to some halfords special stick on filler caps etc, at least they're interesting!

Like most body kits, the van one probably started off as a one off, someone saw it, said, wow i could do with one of those, and hey presto the original builder was off and running making bodykits. I think that you could be right about the modular bit, one basic kit, several options to make it individual

Except the level of effort that has gone in and general understanding of doing things properly means it is all a lot better than something a barry boy would knock up with halfords tat.
For this reason it is something to be admired the amount of work and time taken on some creations is amazing

Exactly, with all of those granchan or bosozoku cars it's obvious that's all made specifically for each car, not off the shelf, it's very hard to get "the look" they must have taken ages to do.

Does anyone know much about the subway handles people have hanging off the towing eye sometimes, I've heard it's to do with being anti establishment or something. Is this related to all the soft toys I keep seeing hanging off the towing eyes over here? I've only started to notice it recently
