Girlfriends first car insurance

My girlfriend has just passed her driving test and is looking at first cars.

Insurance on small, low insurance group car is around £1400 for her.

Her dad used to drive but now doesn't as he has no car, I suggested that she should get the policy in her name and have him as a named driver and they could then share the car which she said she was willing to do as long as he doesn't take it all the time lol.

Her dad seems to think that he needs to have a policy in his name on another car to be a named driver on this one, I didn't think this was the case but he insists it is.

So she could have the policy in her name, put him as a named driver and they can both drive that car legally even though he is not insured on any other policy of his own?

Yes, that's the whole point of a named driver.

Ask him how he thinks it works for a couple who only have one car which they both drive.

thats what a named driver is.... a named person that can also drive the car legally.

but as said, just do it yourself as he seems like hard work

I'm only 22 I'm still classed as a young driver I guess as even with 5 years no claims her insurance still goes up with me on it, it goes down 250 quid with her dad on it.

Plus I'd never drive it, he actually will.

just put in any relatives details, even if they dont know, it doesnt matter as they will never drive the thing.

just keep putting in details until you find the one that makes it the cheapest.

Of course, they will wonder why you're asking them when they passed their test and whether they have any points/accidents or not.
