Mk2 Focus Saloon - Yay or Nay?

Hi guys, I've just bought myself a 3 year old focus 4dr in black in titanium spec. It's really just a workhorse car but I was looking for your opinion about the aesthetics of it. I've always liked the profile of a traditional 3 box saloon and although the Mk1 4dr was ugly, I think the Mk2 looks quite nice. You don't see many so that makes it look unusual at first but I have to say it's growing on me! Seems quite well proportioned, although others disagree!
So what do you guys think then? Saloon or hatch?

I saw one at a petrol station a month or so back in light met blue. I was surprised how good it looked actually. I don't think pics do it justice and the rear 3/4 view actually seemed very well penned in my view.So what do you guys think then? Saloon or hatch?
So in all honesty I think it looks better than the hatch variant.
Well it's nice to see that a couple of you agree and I'm loving that ST saloon! I think that some small saloons look pretty awful as the boot is quite clearly an afterthought and totally out of sync with the rest of the car. I just think that if ford had never launched the mk2 hatch and released that instead most would quite like it.
Also, why is it that saloons of any kind are only popular in this country if they have a german badge. I mean the VW jetta is a common sight and that's just a booted golf. The 4dr focus is actually about the same size as an old shape A4 and IMO looks just as well balanced.

Fully agree, but most people are sheep, so will only like what the "think" they are supposed to like....

Again because most people are sheep I think. A sad fact, but true.The saloon is number one on my list of "Cars which were originally designed as hatchbacks and were then made into saloons but shouldn't have". Please don't do it and leave this abomination to the Yanks for whom it was designed.

I can understand the gripes people have with the supermini saloons you see on the continent, but I actually prefer the 3 box design so long as it has been well executed. I don't mean to sound pretentious but a decently balanced saloon looks smarter and more purposeful than the equivalent hatch, if anything it is the practical hatch that should have the frumpy image. Maybe I'm just old fashioned!

No, I agree. I would never buy a saloon because as far as I can see they just aren't as good as hatches or estates, but I do think they tend to look better balanced. The exceptions typically being those designed first as hatches. However I think the Focus mk2 gets away with it quite well.

2. You saw the hatch variant first, and due to point 1 above, your expectation was a Focus should be hatch period
And looking at this, I don't see how it looks remotely hatch with a boot tacked on (check out that C pillar line, it's not a hatchback shape), if anything its the hatch that looks the afterthought.

+1I love these in a "normal car" kind of way. The newer shape one is even better looking, they do it in a slightly lighter blue similar to Ford's Miami Blue of the 80s/90s mmmm
