I've got two cars......

One is a 2003 model, cost a little shy of £8k, has done 120k, with Full Service History.

The other is a 2001 model, has done a very similar mileage with Full Service History and cost £1,400

One of these cars has just passed it's MOT with no problems, and a couple of very minor advisories.

The other of these cars is due an MOY next month, needs new shocks, and generally crashes around with rattles...

One of these cars does about 38 mpg, the other does 37 mpg. Once is Petrol and one is Diesel

One of these is a Saab and one is a Mercedes E class.

Let's see if anyone can get the right parts of this tale together...

Merc is the oil burner and returns 37mpg, Saab is the petrol and does 38mpg. 320 CDI and 2.0t would be my guess from those figures. 2003 and due its MOT would also be Mercedes.

Given the option, if it did not mean realising a loss on the MB, I'd change it for another Saab

And that was cheating. I reckon the MPG merc could be improved by changing the thermostat which seems to be knackered. More noticeable in winter though

38mpg out of the 2.3t 9-5 is impressive, got a mate who has had 3 2.0t 9-5s and don't think they managed more than 40mpg.

It does not happen often to be fair. It takes a long journey in no rush i.e. 70 with no temptation to go faster... 36 is easily achieved though, 34 in my local driving.
