Anyone here ever gone through the process of chopping a car and making it into a pick up?
I cannot find the right pick up for my needs so fancy making one.
The way i see it, take one car, remove the rear roof, seat bench and glass, the boot lid and cut the rear firewall away. Add rear half roll cage for strength and plate the rear to make into a useable pick up style base. Add in some rear window glass and surrounding metal from something of a similar size.
The rear lights and drop panel would probably need to be a custom setup but easy enough to do.
Anyways, anyone ever done this themselves? What sort of problems did you come up against with MOT's etc?
I'm assuming it is allowed, have seen minis etc done like this but will it need an IVA?
Cheers,

Are you sure a Maloo wont fit your needs?
Fits my needs but not my wallet. Can you get them over here in RHD?

I'm thinking something fairly similar though.

Would need to be the V8 version. And probably with an R154 manual box too.
The problem is, you need to start with a 5dr estate or they end up looking weird because the 2dr doors will be too long to get the proportions right.
Skyline R34 GTR ute using Stagea and a bit of creativity?
An imported Maloo will be RHD because Aussies also drive on the proper side of the road.

I did consider the XJS but not really gaining much room.
Proportions look pretty good to me :

Nice model car. Not sure it would be so easy in real life..?Proportions look pretty good to me :

There's a storming Ford P100 in the PH Classifieds...

Unfortunately 'tis sold, but it looks great, and would certainly go well with the (stereotypical) Cosworth lump fitted.

I'd imagine you'd get similar bed length to crew cab pick up? I'd have to break out the tape measure.Proportions look pretty good to me :

nice model, but I like the way the italian wine merchant kept the distinctive sweep of the b pillars in his real world conversion, seeing that made me think of reasons to have a ute.
Stuart Appleby the Australian golfer had an M5 Ute. One of the nicest I've seen!

Every time I look at a mk3 Mondeo hatchback i think that would be a damn good car to Ute
Weld the rear doors up, cut everything out behind the b-pillar above the windowline, weld the flat bit of the boot lid back in to give you the back of the ute
Then build a metal/glass divider behind the b-pillar (think the same way the back of a series3 landie curves round) to separate the load area from the cabin. It would be a pain with the curtain aribags etc but it could look quite good

I take it you mean saloon. But I don't agree, the mondeo is utilitarian, not a thing of beauty.Weld the rear doors up, cut everything out behind the b-pillar above the windowline, weld the flat bit of the boot lid back in to give you the back of the ute
