So I'm sat on the A12 in lane 3 and have been for the last hour.
Some poor sod about 20 cars ahead has just had a big shunt and the blue light club are presumably busy cutting them out of their car.
Everyone has pulled over to allow ambulances etc to get to and from the scene but what I find astonishing is the amount of people standing around in the carriageway, having a fag, having a nose, wandering up for a look, sitting their kids on the roof for a better view etc...
This is on a wet d/c with 70mph traffic in the opposite lane, bikes ambulances and police constantly filtering.
One bloke is wearing a tabard so he's ok, one whole family just walked to the front for a nose!
Seriously, what is wrong with people?

Morbid curiousity i guess. There must have been a study but google kept on spellchecking me to an underground magazine.

At least it's on your side.

IMO there should be a bloody big fence down the middle, pisses me off no end when the traffic slows and bunches and almost comes to a stop in my direction, when the incident is on the other side.

Eyes front, ignore it, and keep bloody going. WTF has it got to do with you?

I've always thought that the armco on the central reservation should have ten-foot high "black-out curtains" fitted along its entire length, which can be popped up by remote control for a few hundred yards either side of the incident on the other carriageway.

A very physical "Move along, nothing to see here..." message.

Human nature, unfortunately. We are pre-programmed to look at stuff like that, I read it is an inbuilt mechanism to help us avoid a similar fate, or something like that.

Trees. Big, mature, trees. Something to focus the mind on what's going on around you in the hope more will also do so and there will be less opportunity for testing the effectiveness of the trunks at keeping everything to one carriageway.

Well, I'm just bored after being stuck in a traffic jam for a while. I do get out when stationary for long period of time just to stretch...

I'm normally curious at the site of an accident purely because I'd like to know what caused it. I won't slow down for a better look however, if I can't see anything whilst travelling with the rest of the traffic then I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

I reckon if the cause of more accidents were released it might serve as a way of educating drivers towards the dangers of the roads but then again like the bus driver that almost drove into a pedestrian this morning they're probably too busy reading the paper.

So tell me you've never slowed and looked at an accident scene? The answer will be yes, human nature i'm afraid and always will be.

Yes, people opening their car doors whilst bikers are filtering is always fun!

After being in an accident that shut the road for several hours and queues of people standing around taking photos, I can safely say I never EVER look and just carry on.

Nope, never. I must be the odd one out, because I'm not in the slightest bit interested or curious, instead I have to focus on avoiding and allowing for those who are, which is why I get so irked. Ghoulish nosey curtain twitchers.

Quite recently the driver of the car in front of me in L3 slowed to such a degree to have a damn good look (road clear ahead of him), I had to switch to L2 and undertake the tt whilst I leant on the horn for the duration of my undertake.

Yep, must have been the day for it.

Got seriously held up on the M5 today... only to find out it was a little dink on the front of a focus, on the other bloomin' side!!

If its on myside thats fair enough, an accident has occurred people will get held up, but why do people gorp when its on the other side?!

Even if its human nature, I can tell from just my peripheral vision: Ford Focus, on the hard shoulder, ding on the wing, minor shunt - no need to even lift off the gas.

And this is how accidents happen. Some dork clearly isn't paying attention, so you blind side him/her and scare them back to reality and unpredictable behaviour.

Who is the tt in that?

What do you mean, the cause of all accidents is excess speed!?

I choose the driver number 1, what do I win?? smile

Oh wait, it's the UK 2010, nobody is responsible for their actions, we should praise them for causing a traffic jam. loser

What you say based on what I posted doesn't sound unreasonable. But you weren't there. He didn't just lift off and slow to have a look, he braked fairly strongly and crooned to have a gander. L2 was clear so I simply jigged into it, and it was just as well I did as the car that was immediately behind me in L3 had to brake sharply and nearly ploughed into the back of him.
