Hi,

Just opened a second fast food place and two days in it's getting good feedback from customers. I'm going to start advertising via leaflets in letterboxe's within a fortnight.

At the moment, the small number of staff I have are not so knowledgeable of the local area, or dont have a driving license. I'm hoping to use either a Golf Tdi or an Astra Van (which is more likely as I can do the shopping in this) as both the deliveries and shopping vehicle.

However, one of my staff is (like me), young(ish) at 22. He however has a renewed license with less than 6points. The offence for which he got banned for was Drink-Driving. It was a mistake on his part, but he doesnt drink anymore (that's what he told me).

If I was to get a business policy, including S + D, and commuting, would they ask for specifics of each driver who intends/could use the vehicle or would they say give us a criteria (eg. 21+ and max 6 points)

I've been rushed off my feet last few weeks, and usually get home late. As far as am aware most business related car insurance is a ring up and ask affair, which I won't have time for atleast a another few weeks. Was hoping the good people of PH could help shed some light on the topic.

PS - If any of you have any similar cover on similar vehicles, could you tell me how much £££ the insurance is likely to be so I can budget for this, that would be a great help. Thank You.

Google a company called barnett and barnett, based nesr london. They can arrange business cover and i believe specialise in fast food. My shop is provided with an Occasional Business Use policy which piggy backs an owner drivers existing policy to cover the business element. There is a general age limit of 18 years old but i believe if there are convictions for drink driving or dangerous driving then a policy is invalid, but this could depend on individual policies. Not entirely sure of the details but barnett and barnett are a great company to deal with!

Good luck with your venture!

Thank You thatsPrettyShady.

Have left a message in the 'contact us' area of the website, asking for a call back/e-mail for a quote. Did mention the akward work hours I work and therefore am expecting, (hopefully) an e-mail.

It is an akward one because I am ideally looking for business cover, with young drivers (21+), and any staff can use the car type cover. Hopefully they wont ask of details for intended users, maybe perhaps max 6points. But thats being wishful I think. It would make my life easier If I could get a policy covering everyone. I am actually willing to pay perhaps £2000 on a diesel astra van. (Is that reasonable?)

Any other suggestions PH?

PS- My taxi insurance would have covered this (for myself only) but it was £4000 last year, and with one year no claims as taxi it went up to £4800 so I packed that job in. If you have any suggestions, however wild please suggest.

Thank You.

O/P you will need to check specifics out with your particular company, as all policies are different.

However; in general terms, you will have to pay quite a bit more for any driver cover. Some insurers won't even do it for under 25s. If you can name drivers it will usually be cheaper. Your man with the DR10 on his licence will be expensive, I hope he's worth it for the extra premiums. If you are not sure how an insurance company will treat a claim when it transpires that the driver has convictions that they would normally exclude, ask the company. As I said at the top, they are all different, but the best info for your case will come from your insurance company.

We deal with around 20 commercial vehicle insurers and not one of them will offer a policy for anything less than any driver over 25, and even then drivers with claims/convictions have to be named.

If you're looking to insure the van for a 22yr old with a DR10, and don't have any ncb to use, I'd be amazed if you get any change out of £1500, and £2k wouldn't surprise me given you'll also be using it for fast food deliveries.

Thank You All for your replies,

Apologies for the delay in my reply. The reason why I was asking about the staff in question, was because he is actually somebody who I can trust to do a good job and keep a safe and clean working environment if I am elsewhere.

We are only a small business and it makes it difficult to keep employing and training staff many times through out the year. I prefer to keep on to good staff who can cover many areas of the business from food preparation to customer service to deliveries.

He is also familiar with the local cash and carry's, and can be sent to go shopping with a list and therefore freeing myself to concentrate elsewhere.

Also an open policy would not only cover him, but myself (22), and other staff varying from 24-50. (We are however only a small business so it would not be anymore than 5people) But at the moment im finding it difficult to find adequate cover.

In terms of price, I think I would be willing to pay up-to £2000. I understand the Dr50 code on his license hikes prices up, but would they ask for every driver's details on an open policy?

Anyway thank you for your replies, If you do come across any insurance companies offering such polices at reasonable prices, please do let me know.I would prefer open policies because it makes it easier for myself.
