Hi,

I,ve currenty got a a3 3.2 and I want abit if a change.

I,ve seen a nice m3 locally with 32k on the clock which I'm quite keen on. Now I haven't driven an m3 bu presume I won't be disapointed....

What are the running costs likely to be compaired to my A3?

Any other tips would be great!

Cheers in advance.

No expert on either car, but obvious points are insurance. (one of the things stopping me getting the m3)

Don't imagine real world mpg will be that different either, however consumables like tyres etc will probably cost a packet more on the bm.

I've read that inspection 2 is the one to look out for. Make sure it's done and if it isn't make sure it isn't due soon.

Running costs for an E46 are on another level to the A3, servicing your looking at £750 plus any parts for an Insp 2 from
A BMW dealer if it's over 4 years old (likely is now)

Parts that are M specific (brakes suspension) for example are far more expensive than regular run of the mill parts, I was quoted over £1400 to have my lower arms done at the dealer as the balljoints were nearing the end of their life at Insp 2 time

MPG in general will be better than the A3, ours averaged 22-25 in town and easily got 30+ on a steady run.

Do it if you can afford the running costs

And yet if the OP is considering an older M3 out with the AUC warranty scheme, he'd be frankly mad to have his car serviced and maintained at the main dealer.

Therefore, having his car looked after by a specialist would be a considerably cheaper option.

Our local BMW main dealer would do the full INSP 2 service for just £600, so dont believe the scaremoungers on here. Cars over 4 years have discounted servicing.
Brakes are expensive, but they are pretty big drilled discs, Mine went at 38000 miles and a suspension arm was needed for the MOT, that was a pricey £250 from a motor factor even then it was £100 cheaper than a main dealer and had the BMW badge ground off as it was exactly the same part.
Shop around, they are not that bad. Of course they are more, but they are in a completely different league to an A3.
