Insuring a 400bhp+ import for a couple of days?
Discussion
I've tried as many places as my patience will allow.
I need to insure a 2011 5.0 Mustang import, on UK plates, for 1 or 2 days.
Has anyone got actual experience of somewhere that will do this and not rape my through my wallet?
And please, no LMGTFY links, i've tried so many places off Google.
I'm just hoping that one of you lovely peopel has actually tried it yourselves and succeeded...

to be fair you could start up a new policy and just use the 2 week cancelation period.
I have thought about the cancellation period thing, but that's gotta be a bit dodgy, hasn't it?
If i used it for 2 days, then cancelled, how much would you get charged? I'd guess they'd do it as a month.
get insurance (as if for a year) on a pay monthly basis, subject to no claims/collisions, cancel within the 14 day period, cancel the DD, get charged £80 admin fee tops.
If the worse happens, you have to pay that month + excess!
adrian flux?

Not Dodgy in terms of insurance fraud, you are obtaining insurance legitimately, paying for it, then deciding you don't want it.
Admin Fee is going to be less than short term insurance costs.
If the worse happens, you have to pay that month + excess!

bit like having a phone contract and making a call, doesn't mean you cannot cancel because you have used it.
could be wrong...

You've agreed to pay an annual premium in monthly instalments, not to only pay a rolling monthly fee until you decide to cancel the contract / have an accident

I'm guessing that the Stang is a group 18 or higher for insurance, If it isn't then tempcover maybe able to help?
Went through this trying to get cover for a Pulsar GTi-R that I had purchased on behalf of a friend in Finland. None of the short term type companies would touch it because it was a) an import and b) modified.Your best bet IMO is to do as others have mentioned and take out a policy with a "normal" insurer, opt to pay monthly, pay the deposit, then cancel within your 14 day cool off period.
I had to do this when I purchased my MR2 Turbo. It was a sunday, my preferred insurer was closed so I took out a policy with Direct Line which I then cancelled three days later once cover was sorted with my preferred insurer. There was no cancellation fee and I got the whole deposit back. That said I do not know where I'd have been if I had needed to make a claim in those three days.
Crack Fox, if its all above board then why not share with the class?

Anyway, if you cancel insurance midway through a year you only pay for the insurance up until the cancellation point plus some 'admin fee'. At least that's the way its worked the many times I've done it - it might not be the case with some companies.

Does the same apply if you claim though? If you cancel the ins company hasn't really lost anything, but I can't imagine they'd let you claim on a £1k policy after paying less than £100 for the first month?
ETA:
Admiral seem to expect the entire premium to be paid if you make a claim:
"If you make a claim and you have not paid all your premium, we may deduct unpaid premium from any claim settlement we make to you."

You get 7 days free insurance with an official HPI check. I did this recently and it was £5 cheaper than the single day insurance companies.

Basically, no. If you make a claim you have to pay the whole year. Again - only my experience so might not apply to every company.Gassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
