Diesel slag for commuting - 50-6-mpg £1.5k

Hi all, friend of mine is going back to study a Masters in September and is looking to avoid using the train to reduce his commuting costs.

Therefore I think he is in need of something very low cost to run (and low cost to buy in the first place!). I suggested the following (although I have not checked whether they would fit in the budget):

- VW Lupo
- Renault Clio DCI

Pretty dull 'What Car' I know, but essential all the same!

The Lupo TDi is surprisingly good fun.

Don't know if it fits price wise but maybe worth a look...

Peugeot 106 diesel. All in it will actually be cheaper than walking.

Citroen Xantia springs to mind; purely for the unwashed, hairy, rape look.

It does pain me to recommend a French car though.

Particularly after the atrocity that was my wife's Citroen AX.

Pug 406 with XUD and Bosch fuel pump. Trip to cash and carry for lots of veg oil.

I wouldnt imagine you will get a Lupo TDI for that budget, maybe an old SDI though!

As above, I would be looking a something with a Pug badge on the front

Well just last month I bought a 80k rover 45 2.0 diesel. Its as slow as an old boot in a micra but the interior is finished pretty nicely, has air con and actually does do 60mpg. Bought for £600 with 6 months MOT and tax. (tax alone is about £120)

I have just bought a 2001 reg Rover 45 Connissuer Diesel, 12 Months MOT, £800. £125 a year road tax & 60mpg!!! Proper commuting car, means my MX5 can finally be retired to a pampered toy after 5 years constant use and I also save a shedload on fuel bills.

Remember, nobody wants Rovers but regardless of what people say there is nothing wrong with them!

Finally a person who thinks rover are actually good i have a mg zs and again nothing has gone wrong with it apart for the head gasket which is common

Any Lupo will be rough as for that money. Pug 106 D is the obvious choice but if you really want to look like a yoghurt knitter then how about a Skoda Felicia SDi?
