SORN car whilst awaiting parts?

My DC2 is in a garage awaiting repairs being done by my insurance company. Can I declare it SORN and cancel my insurance on it whilst it's there?
It's waiting for back ordered parts that could take weeks and I'm planning on selling it so I have been insuring it on a temporary basis up to now. With the new that parts could take a while, I was considering declaring it SORN. If anything happens to the car whilst in the care of the garage, will it be covered under their own insurance? I intend to call them and ask tomorrow but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a while to get a definitive answer out of them.
