Mentioned on the "What puts you off going to see a car thread", I was wondering what your interpretation of a timewaster is ?
When I see that in an ad just shouts self righteous tosser, possibly someone who has been messed about but you sell a car privately you take the risk, its implicit that people dont want their time wasting, it's finite, nobody advertises a car saying "Timewasters, no shows and test pilots welcome".
I got called a timewaster once by a dealer (performance car type place in Warrington), went to see a Clio 182, drove it, didnt like it but apprently 30 minutes of his time obliges me to buy the car regardless of whether its any good or suitable, after kind of trying to sell it to me desperately, rather than offering alternatives he got rude and unpleasant, saying "I knew you had no money when you came in", he had the cheek to ring me back with an alternative a week later, I thanked him for his interest and informed him I had bought another car.
Sometimes a car doesnt match the description, we bought a Fiat 500 on Ebay that had "No Rust Whatsover" stated in the ad, I was kind of dissapointed when we went to pick it up when his interpreatation of "No Rust Whatsoever" aligned with my "Actually pretty bloody rusty and full of bog" so we didnt buy it, also photos taken should be in the same decade as the ad.
So to me, a "timewaster" is,
Someone who says they are coming down then doesn't turn up, other than that all is fair in love and selling old nails !

Arranging to view then cancelling/not showing up (and then having the cheek to try to rearrange!)
Agreeing a price then turning up with the wrong amount "by accident"
Spending hours and hours sending pics and e-mails then being offered a ridiculous price
Asking hundreds of questions and then never responding, even just to say "not interested"

Yeah, agreed. Buying a car is not like buying a pair of socks. Maybe i'm a timewaster as well, but ffs, how could i decide, when i only have a few 640*480 resolution pic from the car and the ad says "very clean car". IRL, they look destroyed, and "very clean" means manky and clocked several times...

I asked for high-res photos last time, because i wouldn't drive 50-70 miles to see an utter crap. I was about to buy a Calibra, but when i received the HR pics, it seemed the car was clocked or for any other suspicious reasons, the plastics around the clocks showed some traces of a "surgery". If there are no HR pics, then i leave it.

I was looking a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution advert with "No test pilots" written at the bottom. I think that's understandable because I'd imagine with a car like that you do get a lot of people who just want to drive a fast car for the sake of it. If I went to buy a car like that, I'd totally understand if the owner wanted to see the full cash amount up front before driving it, and I would never expect an unaccompanied test drive. I wouldn't expect to be allowed to rag it either.
If I was going to buy a car, I'd expect to be able to negotiate on price but I'd never turn up with less than the full advertised amount.

Too true!Also, with cars - you can get the people who just like looking and driving cars on a sunday.
I had a guy look at my TVR I was selling, he took it for a 3.5 hour hoon using up half a tank of fuel (about £40 worth) and then came back and said it did not drive as well as his mothers 1.9ltr Z3 he came to see it in.
Took him 3.5 hours to come to that inaccurate conclusion

Last year I had someone around to look at my Clio - it was advertised for about £500 on Gumtree. A couple came round, I let the lady drive it around only on the private land and at the end of it they kicked the tyres and she said 'I definitely can't drive a manual - my current car is a manual. It makes my legs hurt'.
If you don't want a manual car then don't bloody go and look at buying a manual car!
I've had more bad experiences buying cars than selling - here's my experience of looking for a Mini Cooper S last month:
Car 1 - High spec, looked great, bit of a dodgy area of Birmingham though. Took it for a drive - Miltek exhaust sounded great, perfect drive. 60k miles on the clock but when I had a look at the service history, multiple reciepts from 2006 onwards showed the car had done 85k miles in 2006! Ran a mile.
Car 2 - Set off on a long journey to view it, just hopped on the motorway when a friend rang me with the HPI check for it. 11 Previous owners! The guy had no good reason for this...Ran a mile.
Car 3 - 150 mile journey to view, so HPI'd it (twice) and got logbook number so I could check MOT history online. All checked out fine so got up there, drove it, bought it.

Yup - going through this painful process at the moment and just can't sell as there so many umms and arrs but no ££££s 
On the flip side am I a timewaster too as I've viewed a few places that I really like (and can afford!) but with no movement on my own, I can't offer real cash?

Hopefully to the nearest Police station to report the seller so some other poor sod didn't get scammed...As a buyer a time waster to me is someone who thinks that FSH means it's seen a garage twice in the first 2 years of it's life and then only when something has fallen off.
Or that I won't notice that 'Just over 80k on the clock' really meant 89,999.
