Fastening Rear View Mirror to Windscreen

OK windscreen specialists, what kind of adhesive do I need to reattach my rear view mirror?

It is quite a heavy item, and the base I need to stick to the screen has a metallic surface - the two sided adhesive pads sold for the purpose in filling stations aren't up to the job.

Good question, I'd imagine an auto parts place will stock the stuff you need.

We always used a two part Loctite construction adhesive (can't remember the number off the top of my head)

ETA - Loctite 319 with 4649 activator

The easiest way, is pop into your local windscreen company and ask any of the fitters to do. Most will do it for the cost of a pint, I lost count of how many I did on my days on the tools.

i had to reattach my rear view mirror in my e36 and i used araldite

The secret is in the preparation of the glass too. Has to be perfectly clean & dry. As said above your local windscreen people will probably do the best job,

I've seen ths stuff on the shelves in Halfords, never used it though, so got no idea if it's any good.

I used the above Loctite 319. Worked fine, just make sure you've got any residue off the screen. And hold it in place for a long time.

I have used the double-sided sticky pads in the past (shown on the Halfords link) though may have been a different manufacturer. Didn't have any problems with the mirror parting company with the screen though, as posted above, good preparation is essential.

That's what I used and it worked perfectly.
There is enough usually to do two.
I had previously used the sticky pads and although they were sticky enough the mirror wobbled around something chronic. Drove me mad.

The sticky pad I got from Ford has held the mirror on for the last two years.
