I've noticed, recently, a worrying rise in the trend for children to be unrestrained in cars.

In the past week I've seen 2 babies on mothers laps (obviously not belted in) and many unrestrained toddlers/young kids in the backs of cars - often stood up in the back.

Over the past few months, I've seen more and more of this - is it just where I live and work ([near]Scunthorpe and in Rotherham) with the great unwashed being increasingly stupid or is it a genuine increase?

Yes. And Birmingham. And Bradford. Don't think I've ever seen it in the Cotswolds.

Although I seem to have spent most of my child hood rolling round unrestrained in the back of an Austin Princess....

Not advocating that not belting children in is a good idea, but we do get more than a little puritanical about it.

Wonder how I survived the 80s at the back of my parents cars (or front, or with my head sticking between both front seats, or unrestrained, rolling around in the boot going to a farm in my grandad's Peugeot 404 pick up)

Their problem ultimately...

You're right, but we're all better educated these days and proper belts & seats are available to keep us in place.

The knowledge that in the event of an accident, no matter how well, safely, slowly, etc, I drive makes me ensure that any children that I transport are properly restrained as I wouldn't want to think that I, through that inaction, caused them injury.

Edit - I also remember not being put in a proper child seat (they weren't available), but I do remember being told to wear a belt - well, in my Dad's car anyway - Being 5/6 up in the back at ludicrous speed was common when were were in France though - never mind the optional kids in the boot smile - I'm no killjoy - it was fun smile

because these days there are laws saying you must be belted in the back in a booster seat till you are 11 or over certain height!

I too had a good few rides in the back of a pick up =D I was living in south africa then though and a lot of cars didn't even have rear seat belts.
