World's fastest sports car raises the bar to 268mph

Bugatti recently clinched another land speed record with its new and uprated Veyron Super Sport model at the VW Group test track near Wolfsburg, and the car has now made its first official public appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The new record is for production sports cars, and at 268mph it's a pretty impressive number. It comes courtesy of an uprated 8 litre, 16 cylinder engine featuring larger turbos and intercoolers making a whopping 1200hp and 1106lb ft.

According to the official announcement, the Super Sport chassis has been extensively tweaked to cope with the additional power and increased speed. Revisions include a slightly raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilisers, and new shock absorbers. With lateral acceleration results of up to 1.4 g and improved interaction between the tyres and the intelligent all-wheel drive system, the Super Sport offers perfect handling and even more powerful acceleration, they say - and as we're not likely to get a go, we'll just have to believe them!

The body has also been fine-tuned to improve aerodynamic efficiency, while the new fibre structure of the all-carbon monocoque ensures maximum torsion rigidity and passive safety - at a reduced weight. The skin is made entirely of carbon-fibre composites, and the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport will be available in full body clear-lacquered exposed carbon.

Rather than scoops above the engine on the 'standard' Veyron, the Super Sport's engine is fed by two NACA ducts integrated into the roof. The front air intakes have been expanded and reshaped, with the lower one extending around the sides to the wheel arch. The revised rear end also looks sportier, with a double diffuser and new exhaust system.

In case you were wondering, Bugatti has now sold 260 Veyrons and 35 Grand Sports, of which 249 Veyrons and 22 Grand Sports had been delivered. The Super Sport will begin production this autumn at Molsheim and the first five cars - known as the World Record Edition - are in a special black exposed carbon and orange finish, and have already been sold. The press release doesn't mention how much they went for, and as we don't want Bugatti to think we can't afford one, we 'ain't gonna ask!

In record-breaking spec, it's not limited by anything but physics.
The record is an average flying mile in two directions, taken at the same location less than 60 minutes apart.
During the two opposite-direction runs the car actually did 265.9mph and 269.8mph timed average miles in each direction.
The average of those two runs is 267.81 mph, which is the number recorded as the record.

You'd have to guess that in order to average 269.8mph over a mile distance, the car probably did some of it under 269.8 and some over.

I believe it is as it was only a few weeks back they reported the first record attempt, or am I dreaming?

Apologies for any confusion, folks. The car has just made its first public appearance at Pebble Beach, and the latest release contains a few more details about the production version. Plus lots of lovely piccies!

How long before a cars accelation is generally measured in g rather than 0-60 I wonder?
