Signalling BEFORE looking

Is it just me, or does anyone else get annoyed by people on motorways and DCs who indicate when they want to pull out without looking to see whether it's safe to do so. So many times I'm about to pass someone when they indicates causing me to brake (if I think they're going to just pull out without looking as well). I thought it was Mirror then Signal. Normally get annoyed with those not signalling but those signalling when they shouldn't are similarly annoying and dangerous.

I usually signal to show intention. Whether a car is approaching or not is beside the point.

Me too. But only soonish before I intend to do it - not when I'm about to be overtaken.

Yep stuck behind a MLM and waiting for the outside lane to clear I will indicate if there not yet a gap. That way they know I not another MLM and will drop a cog or two to join the lane

Not infallible but a clue is to look for their position in their lane.
Still well within, often means they are just signalling intention and will wait for you to pass.
If they are starting to move offside in their lane, often means they will pull out in front of you, especially if you are leaving a safe gap in your lane to the vehicle in front of you.
This all means constant scanning of those around you and trying to determine their intention whilst always having a failsafe postion for yourself.
Try to maintain that safety bubble around you, even if it means surrendering your position or progress.

i normally check mirror to make sure im not going to scare someone into thinking im pulling out on them and then signal hoping that someone will let me out.

My mum and GF start to indicate when they get onto a sliproad, rather than when they are joining the carriageway.

Whats the point of that? Traffic already on the M'Way knows you're going to join it at some point. Why not make the signal actually signal something ie the point you are about to cross the hatched line?

Me too.

I will wait if a car is right next to me, but if theres too many cars I must indicate to show what I want to do.

At least they signal. The issue is if they move without bothering to check.

On a busy M/way or DC one invaribly has to 'ask'. The driver following may flash you to proceed or move to lane 3.
Then change lane only if it is safe to do so

Yep, this way, then you're signalling for the least amount of time you really need to be.

I work on the basis that if somebody has to brake or swerve on account of my actions, then I have done something wrong.

Even in slow moving traffic, there is invariably a driver who is not driving in the boot of the car ahead of him (or her).

As others have said: mirrors (and check blind spot), signal, manoeuvre.

At least you are getting a signal, whether they look or not.

An increasing number of people don't even seem to bother to indicate full stop when changing lanes on a motorway these days...
