I adore the Hawk Cars HF based on the Lancia, but looking at prices, you need £15k+, westfield is similar price range.

Is this the cheapest kind of money you could get a kit car for?

The cheapest way is to find your local rubbish hoarding weirdo and declare "I'll take away that Rickman Ranger/Dutton Sierra/Half finished BAnham XTR for you if you pay me fifty quid"

They'll be happy.

Seriously there's some absoulute junk out there at appropriately low prices.

HA, you'll be lucky. if you want to spend less that £10k on a cobra you will be looking at one that is held together with blu-tac and have a ford V6. cheapest kit cars you can buy are probably older duttons. Lomax prices are very slowly going up, so if you want one of those then i would get one soon, you will get a decent one for £3k-£3.5k

ETA- you're probably best in the kit car part of the forum as many people here are prejudice towards enthusiast built cars, most people have no idea rolleyes

I bought a Dutton for £1800 and sold it for less. It wasn't decent one when I bought it and I sold it with a bonus hole in my piston

Is the OP after a complete car or a kit to build?

What do you want the car for? A Hawk and a Westfield are pretty different!

Certainly no need to pay £15k for a Westfield (or other 7 clone) - half that will pick up something decent. £4-5k is probably a realistic minimum, much below that and you're into really esoteric / unloved things like Duttons, Leaders etc - nothing wrong with that, but if you wanted one you'd probably already know you wanted one smile

I was looking for a sub £5k kit car for a while until I established that they are all largely st. I ended up buying a £600's worth of MX5 which was better built, more practical, economical, comfortable, reliable, safe and better looking than any Dutton POS.

Which can then be mated to a Westfield body at a later date when rust kills it

that surprises me, I have seen a lot of kit cars at sub 5k, some are st, like you say, but most are well looked after, some may be knocking on a bit, but you can get a westy for 4-5k. there are a lot of options out there. personally, i wouldn't buy a dutton or leader, simply because i don't like the looks of them, but a well sorted car can be very fast.

I didn't realise that you could do a westy, but you can certainly do an MEV Exocet.

Some excellent info here http://www.flyinmiata.com/westfield/ These guys really know their stuff, especially where MX-5's are concerned, they also do forced induction and turnkey V8 installs

What's not to like? I know it is a marmite car on this site but the MX-5 is an excellent package and the traditional donor cars are getting rare, seen how tricky it is to pick up even Sierra bits?

Cant remember who but somebody said what did i want?

Well, just something to build from scratch and have the pride of knowing i had built something i could use that would work.

If you really want a Hawk, sometimes bargain kits turn up as a part built from people who give up building them through lack of time or illness or something.

They are a bit of work as people generally pull the car back apart to put it back the way they want it, but for less than the cost of a kit you can often get a complete kit with most of the hard and expensive to locate parts thrown in.

Not seen one on the market for a while, there must be one due.

Maybe it's because you wanted a well sorted car for peanuts.

Mx5s are run of the mill, they're everywhere. It's no surprise you can pick a cheap one up. Well done.
