Which would you buy? 2004 ST 220 or 2004 Civic Type R

Guys,
I appreciate your help so far. As per previous threads, £6.5k is the budget - criteria is that it must be reliable, won't cost a fortune if it goes wrong, and shouldn't depreciate like a stone in 2 years time. 30 MPG as an average is livable.
So.. what do you think of this:

In my opinion, i think the Civic is a boys car, the ST is a mans car. I hate the Type R with a passion, seems to be often driven by idiots.
The ST stands out much more and looks far far better than the sad puppy dog face of the type-r (remember top gear - more exclusive than an Aston!)

The 3.0 litre V6 in the ST is an absolute peach.
When it comes on cam it just goes and goes. You'll never get sick of it.
It's also got a cracking chassis for a front driver, and are very comfortable on long journey's. Avoid the 5 speed ones at all costs, they really need the 6th gear on the motorway.
And as chappy said above, less of a "bellend image" than the Type-R.

Hondas do have an unfortunate image, but that's because I've resided near a local drag strip that has a McDs at one end and an ally wheel shop at the other?
I work with two Civic modifiers. One got banned, the other drove into a stationary vehicle on a road they travel along 5 days a week.
The advert for the Mondeo is 30 days old and they can't spell Recaro seems good enough reason to chisel the price.
Neither, get an Accord Type-R and save yourself £3K.

Civic Type-R would be a much better contender in the corners (Obviously. CTR's are much lighter than ST220's.) and that Revvy Engine forces you to keep that accelerator pinned down, however, the ST220 would be the one I would pick overall. It is a great handler for such a big and heavy car, but that Engine is a beauty. It's nice and lazy around town, but when the second Cams kick in at around 4000rpm, it's like a totally different animal. They pull like a train, and there very comfortable too and make a fantastic cruiser.
One word of advice though, if you do decide to go for a ST220, try and get one without a black interior. The black leather is nice, but it makes the rear passenger compartment feel totally cramped and dull. Try and get one with a beige interior.
As for any problems, there pretty bulletproof. I have a ST220 Engine in my Mk1 Mondeo Saloon, and it has done over 25,000 miles of driving since I fitted it, 75% of that time being thrashed. It still runs sweet as a nut and I have had no issues with it.

eta: if you asked adrian flux i would not be suprised if they can get you £200 off that quote.

I love the Type-R but like the others have already said, it holds an image of a boys car.
The ST on the other hand still catches my eye and still makes my pants move, yet I do not automaticly expect the person in the ST to start revving their engine at the lights.
No idea on how either drive though!

You wont get anything like 30mpg from the civic. Its very nature means you tend to rag it everywhere just to get some sort of enjoyment. It has awfull vague steering too.
I just dont like Vtec engines - peak power may be good but you have to search really hard for it.
Mondeo may be a better car but its still a w
ky Mondeo....try something like a Renaultsport; at 2004 year depreciation will be minimal. Just buy a good one.

1) You will easily get more than 30mpg from the Civic. At a steady 60mph it'll do more than 45mpg. Below 6000rpm it's a 160bhp 2.0 engine with plenty enough grunt. I just dont like Vtec engines - peak power may be good but you have to search really hard for it.
2) You don't have to search for the power, because you have a gear box. They're a handy invention. Notwithstanding the fact that 90% of peak torque is available from 3000rpm, it's a light car and it has a 6 speed box that'll allow you to potter about in 4th all day long at 20mph and pull away cleanly.
3) The steering is not 'vague'- it is anything but. It's actually well weighted and very well geared for UK roads. The only downside is that it runs through an electric motor and, like many such systems, it tends to remove a small amount of the feel you get from hydraulic ones. We're talking about very, very small relative differences, though.
Clearly you've opened your mouth and made some silly comments because you don't really know what you're talking about.
