Seriously do not go for the easytronic gearbox, it is seriously awful. Also the emissions are higher than its equivalent manual transmission, not only this but it will be slightly heavier on juice. The full auto is the better one to go for, if that is what you want.

Agree, try the 1.8 auto instead.

We have one of those, it's rugged and the 1.8 is well suited to it with the extra capacity.

I've a 1.8 SRI auto, the 4 speed slushbox. Pointless 'sports' button, unless you link permanent kickdown and 20mpg. Easytronic is just not nice, changes at the wrong times and gets confused. Manual is better than either box.

Surely there's something in a VAG DSG flavour for similar money? The Vauxhall small engined slushboxes aren't very inspiring... Poor performance, emissions and mpg.

Is there really going to be that much of a difference in fuel economy between a 1.8 and a 1.6? It'll take a while to save more than the £5,500 you want to spend.

Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI Elegance DSG - Bargain it seems on Autotrader. All the toys, DSG, great economy. Get it mapped. etc etc.

The 1.6 is pants in the Sporthatch. It's worse with the horrible old slushbox. As an ex-Sporthatch owner, you seriously need to look elsewhere, especially if you're used to the Mk4 Astra, the Mk5 is a big step backwards.

I had a 2.0DTi Mk4 for 2 years, changed it for a 1.9CDTi Sporthatch and regretted it big time, end up only kept the SH 8 months.

SRI and SXI are just different trim levels. SRI XP is the one to go for ideally.

The SXI and design are trim levels, Not sure if they did the easytrnic as an SXI, but if any are for sale listed as 1.6 Auto it will be an easytronic and the 1.8 will be fully auto

Design is basicly an SXI with half leather and a few more luxurys. 1.8 Design auto would be my choice, or resit your test in a manual!

Yes. The easytronic was mated to the 1.6. Proper auto is 1.8.
