I've posted a request, under David Cameron's initiative to allow the public to influence repeal and change of UK law in the interests of restoration of freedom, to review motorway speed limits, and either abolish them or increase the limit to 85 MPH.

Unsurprisingly, Brake and the other anti speed at any price lobbies have gone on the attack!

It would be good to see some support for a very reasonable request, which is about the application of common sense in a technologically advanced World. If you feel that you can comment and/or vote on the matter, have a look at:

Many thanks

whilst im all for an increase, i firmly believe certain drivers should not be allowed to go so fast (especially in certain cars)

no idea how you could govern this mind.

Dunno about 85mph but I would be all for the same limits as France for example with a 130mph speed on motorways with 110kph in wet conditions or on DC's

Or maybe just keep the 70mph limit but be more lenient on those exceeding it.

15 mph blanket arround schools term time or not, yet alot are still 30s. i dont think any increase in the limit is needed but more lenient on high speed offences eg 90 in 70s etc but harsher on low speed offences ie 45 in 30s.

I think you might have over estimated the French tolerance for high speed travel! wink

I think it might have been wiser to ask for an 130kph limit, to bring us in line with much of Europe. Many of the further restrictions that various mentalists would seek to impose upon us come from Europe, (such as the lower DD limits, but without the lower punishments of course). 130kph could have been converted into an 80 with-a-tad-to-spare limit, and would allow those of us who desire so to cruise at a nice indicated 85. Also keeps us a bit further from the 90 mph 'enforcement measure', if that makes any sense.

I'm rather shocked by the claims in this document though http://www.pacts.org.uk/docs/pdf-bank/motorwayspee...

Are French autoroutes really 125% more dangerous than ours? I find that the difference in driving conditions between France and UK to be stark, the UK m'ways being so congested and populated by so many aggressive and selfish drivers, completely unlike France in my experience.

I've been trying to get my head around how France could have an autoroute casualty rate 125% greater than ours, and the only conclusion i can come up with is the the reason our m'way casualty rate is so low is because most of the time the traffic is crawling or stationary.

In which case the higher speed limit would make no difference.

Lies, damned lies, and Brake statistics!

All the best, I do support your idea (I'd say a 90mph limit would legalize most motorists), but I'm not currently registered over there and there more than enough Brake trolls here already.

A law that we all break is a dumb law. It happens when our politicians have something to gain (i.e. money) by us breaking the law.

Some of the claims made in that document are directly
contradicted by

http://www.abd.org.uk/motorwayspeedlimit.htm

This document sounds, to me, a lot more plausible
than the pacts document.

It's an undemocratic law then. Democracy 101 states that if the majority disagree with/ regularly ignore a law then it isn't law. The fact you can be prosecuted for speeding on a motorway tells you a lot about the country we live in.

And inconsiderate driving/driving without due care & attention is dumb law then, or tax evasion come to that.

Good point well made. A certain degree of common sense obviously needs to be applied, but if anyone finds a way to legislate that I'll be impressed.

Bloody hell, the comments on there... these people seem to believe that at 1 mph more than an arbritary speed some sort of motoring armageddon will occur, very strange.
