Having recently purchased a 2 stroke motorbike that generates 320hp/litre and is the equivalent of a 4 stroke bike of twice the capacity, Ii's got me thinking about the history of 2 stroke engines in cars.
The only thing I know for certain is that early Suzuki LJ10 jeeps had a 359cc 24hp 2stroke engine, and later a whopping 539cc! They where, by most accounts, fairly bombproof and easy to fix when they did go wrong.
Was the trabant a 2stroke?
What other cars have used 2stroke engines and are there any motorsport successes from 2 stroke powered cars?

60's DKWs were 2 stroke.
Some interesting info about DKWs and strokes on this site, including a V6.
I also recall reading about a Toyota 6 cyl inline 2 stroke experimental engine in the South African CAR Magazine back in the 80's.

And...
While many auto manufacturers are looking at two-stroke engines for small, economy cars, Toyota has developed its six-cylinder, 3-1, two-stroke S-2 engine for use in high-performance luxury cars. The S-2 uses a conventional dual-overhead camshaft, 24-valve head with two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder. It uses a Rootes-type supercharger to both scavenge the combustion chamber of exhaust products and to draw in the new air charge. The engine also uses direct electronic fuel injection and computerized ignition control.

Husqvarna CR125 Motocross bike. 125cc and near as makes no odds to 40hp. It does need a rebuild every 15 hours though so not really comparable to anything car like.Whats the power delivery like in a 2 stroke car? If it's anything like a bike it would be insanely inpractical on the road.
