how do rear brake calipers work?

just a quick question, im changing all the seals Etc on my sierra calipers for my kit car.
the front ones, the piston flew out by, attatching a foot pump to the hose connector, just as you would expect. (just like the pressure of brake fluid).
but the rears would not come out with the pressure, so had to unwind them.
but i cannot work out how they work, if the pressure i was using wasn't pressing the piston out?
can anyone explain this?
