Modern Toyota Corolla reliability - legend lives on?

I know the old Corollas certainley were tough and you can judge by the numbers you see on the road still, especially in Africa. However with the addition of more and more tech it seems cars are getting more problematic in general. I have looked up on Honestjohn and elsewhere and it seems that these cars are still very reliable bar complains of the MMT box (on all Toyota models), the EGR valve (seems to be a problem on all cars) and the diesels have swirl flap issues. Otherwise all seems good.
I always take these sites with a pinch of salt as owners of certain car types rave about how good it is and often overlook or put up with issues simply because they love the car so much (or they are Fanboys drinking the Kool aid!). For instance, the Honda Jazz that scores in top 3 usually actually has serious problems on the CVT models that requires gearbox replacement! How that doesn't bring the score down in big way I cannot understand...
So, I am actually thinking about a Corolla Verso of the 2005+ vintage. Petrol models only as in Athens I cannot use a diesel. Looking at cars that have covered 60k miles. No in UK I consider that low mileage but out here with crap roads (yes they are worse than UK!!), high heat, lots of dust and lots of aggressive driving cars take much more of a beating. 60k Greek miles is probably like 180k UK miles...
So given that the Verso is a Corolla mechanically I figure there is much more data out there for the Corolla to give an better picture. Also, the Corolla is likely to be used and abused as more would be company cars and hacks.
Also, as this is PH and the Verso or normal Corolla is not a very PH car I want to widen the discussion to get more 'real world' feedback from owners. Of course, PH is always right so I want opinions from here rather than all those JD Powers survey nonsense.
So who has had a big mileage Corolla/Verso from the 2004+ that can share experiences and see if the legendary Corolla reliability is fact or just just an internet survey myth?
