V5 problem

My girlfriend bought a car off her brothers friend who makes his money buying and selling cars at auction.

She has the V5 etc but the previous owner hasn't signed it, the guy we bought the car off wasn't the owner as he only had it for a week so didn't need to register it as his. It says at the bottom of that form that by law the previous and new keeper must sign it.

The previous owner is in Manchester somewhere.

What do we do?

Ask yourself how the DVLA know what the signature should look like?

I had a similar problem. I'm pretty sure I sent off a form to the DVLA requesting a V5, they then send a letter to the owner to ask whether they've sold it. When they reply (or don't reply) they then send you the V5 after 30 days or so.

At least I think that's what happened. No need for you to go tracking down the owner though.

DVLA don't seem to give a crap. I've sent them a V5C that the previous owner forgot to sign and it wasn't a problem.

I've also seen people just make a vague squiggle woth a pen in similar circumstances and again, that seemed perfectly acceptable to DVLA.

just make sure when you do recieve your new v5 its a new red one instead of an old blue one as you wont be able to tax the vehicle come 2012 with a blue one

Doesn't forging a signature equal fraud and i could get in troubles for it?

The dealer you bought it from can sign it with his own signature. Seen it done regularly and its never an issue.

He's not a proper dealer with a showroom etc he just buys cars through auction, fixes them up then sells them on either to ppl he knows or back into auction.

If he buys cars from auction and they hand over the full v5 without having him fill it out then he must have a traders account, therefore he can sign the v5 in his own name. As said before they do not care if the signature is not that of the current registered keeper.

You obviously missed the bit where they're sending out a new red one when the car is retaxed. Unless you're not taxing your vehicle between now and then, you'll not have a problem.

You obviously missed the bit where they're sending out a new red one when the car is retaxed. Unless you're not taxing your vehicle between now and then, you'll not have a problem.

Hence why I deleted it once I'd read it properly
