S4 b6 vs VXR8 mpg

My 04 S4 (v8)is now getting on a bit and it could be time to move on to something else. I've been looking about for something to replace it with (£20k max) and the only car I can think of is the VXR8?... Need 4 doors with room for two kids and bang for buck I cant see anything else comparing. Im going to book a test drive to see how they go, but again judging by the reviews - very well! Does anyone have any experience of them (VXR8 that is), having read various reports a lot of them state that the mpg is better than the 4.2 S4!? Is this possible with another 1.8 litres?!

I appreciate that their both not exactly the most economical of cars but I wouldnt really like to spend more on petrol that the s4.. (well not much more anyway!)

ive looked at the vxr8 in the last few weeks, and 20 is a reasonable average it seems

Around town - 16mpg just over 17 mile commute and motorway 23 max - seems impossible to get any more (car is manual not auto) as I know the auto gearing is better for MPG.

The Auto may be better for MPG, but having driven the auto VXR8, it is just awful, very skippy and never really makes it mind up!!

Im always amazed when I read fellow s4 owners getting more as i just cuise along going to work and long distance it seems that 23mpg is a brickwall as far as the audi goes.

So I guess my question is - how would a car with another 1.8 litres (6 ltr) get better mpg? is that possible? It seems plenty of VXR8 owners are getting 29mpg on long runs?

If its of any help, I used to get an average of 18.5mpg out of my old V8 S6 (same engine). Same type of usage in the VXR8 and Im getting a 22mpg average.

Having said that, I have had around 30mpg on a run!

Aeroresh - so would you say that the VX is overall better on MPG than the audi? Its the only thing stopping me taking the plunge as I use the car to commute - I noticed yours is SC, does that make the mpg worse?

Althought I've never even driven either of the cars mentioned here, I am also amazed at the mpg some people claim to get. I regularly get 23mpg on a run in the CL, and used to get something similar in the XJ- you read the MPG Wiki here and people are claiming to get 30mpg+. I've always assumed this was part of PH boasting - oh yeah I get 50mpg AND drive everywhere at 120 sort of thing. If you're getting 23mpg out of your S4 I wouldn't bank on getting 29 out of the VXR.

Mine is the non supercharged Bathurst (although its booked in for the supercharger in 2 weeks ). Having said that Ive had it on good authority that the supercharged cars are more fuel efficient providing you dont use the additional performance due to better mapping.

Overall, I would say its around 4mpg better than the Audi driven in a similar manner, although the S6 is a slightly heavier car than an S4 (and an auto) which may distort the figures a little.

Aeroresh - Whats it like in comparison to the S6? Im assuming its a bit more fun to drive, are you happy with it so far?

Very different animals. Audi felt very sophisticated in comparison and the interior quality was in a different league.

VXR8 is a little crude but imense fun and surprisingly comfortable as an everyday car.

Only issues Ive had with mine have been minor such as rapid indicator flashing and misting up rear lamps. Both of which only appear to occur during winter months (something they dont get in Oz?). Fixed under warranty though.

Am I right in saying the VXR8 got the LS3 engine in 2008? I hired a Corvette in Florida with the LS3 engine, and I averaged mid-20's on a run down to Miami from Orlando. Very impressive.
