Or maybe I should say 'commuting'.

I had to complete a 250 mile journey south today, so I thought I'd give the traffic a chance to die down and leave home at 11am. My journey would be M6 from the North-West, then M40, A34, M3, M27, A31 to Poole.

M6 - for the entire stretch all the way to the toll road the matrix signs displayed 'Heavy Delays M6 J11a'. The whole stretch, from J23, so that must be more than 50 of these signs. Every moron, upon seeing these signs, took their attention off the road and their foot off the accelerator to read the sign, causing the whole flow of traffic to slow down to an average 45mph for 80 miles. fking useless telling people that the M6 is busy at 11a 80 miles north of it. Anyone with a brain cell knows it's going to be st there and will either sit in it or plan their route around it beforehand! It would help more if the sign displayed 'DON'T HOG THE MIDDLE LANE IN YOUR PIECE OF st ZAFIRA 2.0DTI BREEZE FULLY-LOADED WITH LUGGAGE AND MORONIC CHILDREN AND FOUR st ENTRY-LEVEL BIKES FROM HALFORDS STUCK ON THE BACK'.

M40 - At last, a bit of sensible driving. I was mostly able to set my cruise control to 0.8 leptons and sit in lane 1. The odd tit head, but nothing out of the ordinary.

A34 - wk. Ok, I know there are a lot of HGV's that use this road and that's unavoidable, it doesn't mean that sitting in lane 2 in a queue of 50 cars is the right thing to do. Move the fk over into lane 1. Yes you, the fat bird in the blue 307. Yes, I'm slowly passing you in lane 1 because you're doing 40mph and there's no traffic for about half a mile in lane 1. Oh that's clever, speed up when I'm alongside you then hit your brakes when you get too close to the other moron in front of you. I have no intention of cutting you up, relax. What do you think all the cars behind you do when you slam on? That's right, they slam on too and cause tailbacks. I hope you get a puncture and suffer lots of inconvenience but no life-threatening injuries.

M3 & M27 - I don't actually remember this part of the journey so it must have been ok. paperbag

A31 - Same kind of mongery as the A34 but not as bad.

So there you go - driving long distance during the day is st, even worse before a bank holiday weekend. 75% of drivers have no spatial awareness and no clue what lane discipline means. What's the answer? Driver education? Too late, too many drivers that think they are the best. The roads are fked, long live the train, but unfortunately the train would have taken me 5 hours with 3 changes and cost £9m and I would have had to sit near 'people'.

I feel sorry for people that have to drive for a living.

Get up at 5.am on a Sunday morning and go to your favourite driving road, or look one up and go there, you'll soon fall in love with driving again.

But yes commuting can be st, best to just go at a nice relaxed pace and not let it get to you.

Yeah, when I get a nice car again I think I'll be up for a few of those early Sunday morning runs. To be honest, my usual commute contains a 7 mile stretch of b-road that I do enjoy. This morning just wound me up.

It's hard to drive at a relaxed pace when all around you have no awareness. I could be cruising along at 70mph in lane 1, approaching an HGV, I check my mirrors and see a car approaching in lane 2 who makes absolutely no attempt to adjust his driving to let me out. Maybe I'm just an excellent driver, but if I see a vehicle ahead that looks like it may need to pull out I adjust my driving by either slowing to let him out, or moving to lane 3 if it's clear.

Always a mistake to imagine that riding a rental moped drunk without a helmet is the same as riding a motorcycle with proper safety gear and training with a clear head.

Well you've obviously made a very un-PH mistake.

What you should have done is invented a A/B road alternative route and used it as a good excuse for a blast.... My suggestion would be A429 from Warwick to Burford, continue on to Swindon, then the A4361 to Devizes and on to Sailsbury (Great road), lastly A338 into Poole (Not a great road, but can't win em all)

Is that not normal PH behaviour?

:-D

banghead

It went on for about 20 miles. I was behind her, and every time we finished our overtake I would move back into lane 1 and she'd stay in lane 2. She'd inevitably have to brake at some point as she'd accelerated to close the gap that she thought I wanted, and I could see her stupid fat head twitching to try and check her mirrors to see where I was. I was happily in lane 1 eating my £3.79 Stafford Services st sandwich and listening to Metallica.

No doubt, somewhere on a wky knitting forum she's complaining about some maniac in a funny-coloured 'Alpha'.

You might have guessed it wasn't exactly a route of tomtom-rivaling-quality, more of a suggestion for a different mindset.

I know I know, it's a great car to chuck around, just takes a bit long to get up to speed. I had a 147 GTA before this and I do miss the power. frown
