Stolen! and Recovered?

Put a bid in for a car on ebay for the missus and won it. It was a MG TF and was reasonibly priced. I have just done a HPI and it comes back as "KH03DVZ is recored as stolen. Loss date 16/02/2006. Ownership rests with the insureres who can repossess the vehicle."
Now it is still showing as stolen with nothing on stolen and recovered. I have spoken to the girl who is selling and she is horrified to hear this. She has owned the car for 2.5 years, has log book and 2 sets of keys. The car has been serviced with history, and to top it all she has recently been caught speeding by the police and fined/points. Do you think this is an error on the database or a genuine stolen car? Where could I investigate further??

Could i contact hpi to see if it is an error? Would they give me details of insurers who have an interest? If it is stolen recovered how much do you think it would affect the value. The cost at mo is £1700.

Surely is the advert doesn't say it is Hpi clear then you will need to buy it?

It also didnt state that it was "Stolen and not recovered" but hey ho! Luckily it was cash on collection so no monies have changed hands.

Ahhh! This is what I love about pistonheads these days! You come on for a bit of advice and end up getting slated!! I didnt HPI it because at that point I hadnt won it. Please define your unique use of "special"?
And just wondering what exactly "that bids on things they know feck all about" means? Do you mean that I dont know about cars? Thanks for your helpful input tho!!

I is most likely an error, a lack of update on HPI. Hence she has the logbook etc and the rozzers havent done her for driving a dogy motor.

BUT, you need to confimr this, so call HPI. If you ahev done a full check, (as you should've) there will be a number to call about it.

Contact the insurance company who have ownership of the car, and ask them if they still have the financial interest in the vehicle. If not ask them to remove it.

So when you buy a car from a non ebay sale. (private or trader) You wait until AFTER you've bought it to do the HPi? Course you don't. Most "not special" people HPis car BEFORE hand. And if it flags it up they walk away. You BID on EBAY and WON. You knowingly entered a contract (and other T&C's) but now want to weasel out of it.

YOU are the reason eBAy is rubbish these days. To many people not doing it properly, getting caught out then crying about it.

Which, unless it said it was stolen/recovered in the listing, isnt as described and therefore the buyer can walk away

YES! FFS YES! I've hpi'd cars in the past, found issues then NOT bought them. That's how the HPI thing is supposed to work! It's £20ish for peace of mind when spending several grand. just because it's an auction doens't mean you just think "fk it I won't bother" Would you do the same at a normal car auction?

Thanks again Rich for clearing that up! Your input is invaluable. Iam not trying to weasel out of anything, I contacted the seller after the HPI hit and she wanted to clear it up before selling the car. As prev stated she was horrified. If the car does get cleared to stolen and recovered I would still buy the car for a lesser price due to its "new" condition. Thanks everyone else who actually tried to help me with my original question.

Car auctions include an indemnity.

If it isn't her car to sell, 'not as described' is valid.

I would think it would be prudent to yes before you commit to buy the car, much like you would in any private sale.
