when did new cars become so expensive?

well i have always been one for a brand new car every 2 years or so (i know its a waste of money) bit the mrs is fancying replacing her astra sportshatch at the minute.

for some reason she has her heart set on a volvo c30 as its replacement, they do little for me so i have been researching alternatives to brief her on,(really i mean something that i like that i can convince her to buy) and what is suprising is the cost of new cars with anything like decent spec.

power is not really important but i think she wants soemthing with a bit of quality/luxury/style.

so i have researched audi a1, audi a3, alfa mito, volvo c30, bmw 1 series, etc etc and they all seem so bloody expensive!

an illustration is i think my sciroccos list price including the options i got was 22k when i bought it 17 months ago, now its over 24k.

I think new cars have always been expensive. It's so that you can lose 5-10k in the first year or so for someone else to get a bargain.

she doesnt like golfs, when i bought the scirocco i actually went to look at golfs, the scirooco was only a very small amount more expensive and seemed like much better value!!!

i tried to point her in the direction of a decent spec polo but shes not sure, i think she should just get a snotter anyway, as she already has use of my vx220 and scirocco when ever she wants more money on cars seems mad!

Even basic models seem to have gone through the roof.

I thought about a new Golf GTI but with the essential spec of leather, DSG and 18" wheels it was around 27 - 28k

No fking chance for a Golf!!

Have you seen the list price of a decent new Fiesta???????????

Your choice are all "in fashion" cars that sell so there are no big discounts, add Mini and Fiat 500 to your list and you would have a full house.

New cars are expensive. I've recently been pricing up a similar range just out of interest. Even a mid-range run around like a new Clio (non RenaultSport) can cost in the region of £15k now. RRP's I've found are as approx. as follows...

Audi A1 S-Line 1.6 TDI, Leather, Xenons, Climate, 18" Alloys, Bose HiFi, Metallic - £21k
BMW 118d M-Sport Coupe, Leather, Xenons, Harmon Kardon HiFi, 18" Alloys, Metallic, £27k

the main problem must be the vat rise. your better off just buying used the depreciation is likely to high aswell

Yes but Fords pricing policy makes no seanse. You can easily knock thousands off a screen price of a Fiesta or Focus, you wont be so lucky with most on the OPs list.
Try www.drivethedeal.com for a start. also if you know someone in the forces there are huge Ford military discounts.
Last year Focus ST 3 were selling at £16000 brand new, thats £5000 off.
Just checked and a Fiesta Titanium 5 door TDCI with a list of £16695 is just £13292 and thats tax paid in the UK from a local dealer.

Agreed with Focus comments regarding discounts. Still, during their price hikes, didn't the Focus at one point have higher list prices than the "equivalent" Mondeo? Now that's mentalist.

she doenst like golfs, however i idependently wanted to replace my ctr with something more sensible so i went out looking at golfs and bought a scirocco, was nothing to do with her at all. so your point is well erm pointless
