Comeback from private car sale?

As the search functiois (still) down I need to ask for yor opinions.
Sold mothers car for her- it is a 50's Lagonda. Chap comes down to take a look, puts down deposit and collects next day.
I had told him it was last running and MOT'd 5 years ago, which is was. Car is a light restoration project.
A week later he is ringing my mum complaining as there is milky oil (suspect head gasket) and he has been quoted £12k to put it right!!! Clearly this is a private sale and at no time did I say it was an up and running example. He checked the car before he bought it so where does this leave us?
What are his rights? I don't believe he has any. Buyers responsibility.

Tell him to do shove his moaning up his ar 5e and f k off while he's doing it.
No comeback. None. He bought a 1950s car as a resto. HIS PROBLEM.

It need'nt be, but it often is. As everyone else has said, he bought the car privately, its his problem. He should have satisfied himself before the sale that he was buying what he thought he was. He didnt, so be strong, and say "tough".he cant do anything, and (more to the point) he shouldnt do anything, as its entirely his thought.
And yes, an engine rebuild on a 2.6l/ 3 litre engine will be about £12k. It was the last engine designed by WO Bentley, you know...

£5 says he'll try and cut a deal next saying that if you give him some cash he'll not involve the courts or a solicitor. He'll probably bring up the Sale of Goods Act aswell (which most definitely doesn't apply to private sales)
People like this really piss me off and give private sales a bad reputation for hassle. Ring him up yourself and in no uncertain terms tell him to f

Just man up, tell them to "F off" and you'll report them to the Police if they continue to hound or harass you.

Nah, tell him you understand his frustration at being inadequate in all senses and that you will fully refund him if he meets your demands...Then tell him that he must either get his case featured on Watchdog or manage to get it featured as a news item on your local news and, only if he manages to get the words 'constipated' and 'hand relief' into his interview will you give him his cash.
