Future of the 911

Given that Porsche have taken to painting bits and bobs various colours in a 90's Saxo Sports Club sytlee, do you think that they have run out of ideas for that design? Is it not time it was retired or do you think its all about function over form?

It will not be retired whilst it is still capable of pissing all over the chips of it's nearest rivals and many cars costing far more.
Yes it is getting harder and harder for them to add something 'fresh' to the design but people still lust after them and buy them so i don't think that it will be drawing it's pension too soon.

A new car will only be new for a short while and then you are back to either needing a new one again or having to make subtle (or not so) styling changes to make it look different.
928 was a replacement, but the 911's still here and the 928 isn't.
And if they are selling cars successfully and hitting targets, why is there a need t change?
Even though I am a fan of Porsche, and would love a 996 Carrera 4S at the moment, I am getting pretty bored reading about each of the latest 911s. A tiny change here, an improvement there etc has obviously made it one of the greatest long running sports cars of all time, still able to run rings round most of its opposition - but I don't care anymore.
I am looking forward to more stuff like the Carrera GT and 918, that is still obviously a Porsche but different to what has come before, some new shapes, engines etc (I don't count the Panamera and Cayenne).
Not that much of this matters to Porsche as I will never be able to buy a new one anyway!

A 911 (997) drove past me this morning, I think it was a GT3, it was red and had a huge rear wing, the driver was middle aged, he stuck out like a sore thumb as if it was his 'look at me I'm still young' mid-life crisis car....god I hope they still make them and I have the disposable to acquire one when I'm in my forties

Yet the GTR costs about half as much as its 911 equivalent and the Cayman is cheaper and if given the same engines it'd be faster...I like the 911 and I'd have one if I could afford it but its becoming a bit of an anachronism, kinda like a Bristol.

Given the history (cf. 928 as somebody has already mentioned) it has to be a fair question. There must be a point when Porsche reach the end of the road for the 911, and then what? I don't believe that the day is going to come any time soon, but I am sure that at some stage, for whatever reasons, it will come.
My 911 experience is limited to driving borrowed 911 3.2's on the road and on two track days. I loved them - driven with a bit of sensitivity they are predictable and communicative beyond belief. For me the fact that if they are driven with no respect they could reverse swiftly to the scene of the accident only adds to the appeal.

Factually, the 991 (next gen car) will show up soon. It a little wider and a tad longer , in fact a pretty big redesign technically, but it will be a 911, true rear engined car. I think it will debut in Frankfurt. As for paint schemes, its an RS branding thing and the next RS is about four years away, so everything from now to then will be silver, grey ,or black.
If the car becomes seriously uncompetitive it will die evidently. Not clear yet that this had occurred.
