I don't know why this thought came into my head just recently... BUT

Would a better measure of acceleration and vehicle performance be plotted in the 0 to 60 mph & distance graph..?

Where the speed is plotted against time - allowing the distance travelled to be calculated as a result.

Light cars like the Caterham, XBow, Exige etc... Would have a rapid rise in the first part of the graph, but would level out towards the high end.

Where as - Heavy cars, Veyron, Monaro, XKR etc... Would have a slower imediate rise but would increase towards the 60 and bolt right through it.

A stupid idea..? Been done before..?
Thoughts.

Surely its nothing to do with weight - more to do with delivery (i.e. turbo etc), traction and gearing.

Exactly - but all combined would show performance to reach the recgnised measured speed.

Why not use 1/4 mile times, which usually give an 1/8th time and terminal speed which all adds up to as much info as your graph, but measured over a bigger distance so more accurate.

I don't think that the speed/time curves for a given 0-60 are all that variable - particularly for quicker cars. They are all somewhere between a straight line and a slightly convex curve.

You might see something more interesting with 0-100, though, with a greater duration and more effect of drag at higher speeds. It does risk coming out as a harder to measure alternative to the standing quarter.

I agree. I recall ages ago on a Clarkson video I had as a child he compared the performance of a Ferrari F40 to other supercars. Then Ferrari's own comparison to the F92, the F1 car from 1992 if I recall.

As I recall the 0-60 times were almost the same for the other supercars and the F1 car. However, the F40 did 0-100 in around 8 seconds which made it far superior to most other supercars of the time. Although the F1 car could do 0-100-0 in around 6. Totally different performance from cars which do similar 0-60 times. All it shows is that 0-60 times alone are pretty much useless.

I was thinking the other day, a standing mile would be quite a good performance indicator, surely better than the arbitary 0-60 etc.

Unless you are comparing cars of very different weight, most of these measurements just put cars in order of power to weight ratio.

If anything, this graph would provide a visual comparison for cars' power to weight ratios.

Rover used a distance chart with the 0-60 chart when the Rover 3500S was launched back in the early 70s. What goes around etc.

"through the gears" figures are meaningful. "in gear" figures are too subject to cars being in the right or wrong gear for the speed.

Agreed. Up to 30 in mine is relatively tame. 30 through 80/90 is seriously rapid. I read somewhere that they had to limit the power in first due to no tcs. Mine is auto but I assume it's the same...or maybe it's just because it's auto.

How do you guys use your 0-60 to prove how fast your car is then, I always have trouble getting the other guy to stop on the road to prove how superior my car is smile. Yes its pointless 0-60 is for the pub. Surely the 50-150 or 70-200 is a measure of a cars potential to acclerate.

0..60 is irrelevant now as 0..62 (100kmh) seems to becoming a standard.
