...just ID me when I went to pay?

She said "ok, you're 17, that's good"

to which I replied

"No, I'm 18"

so she took a closer look at my driving license...

"Oh, yes you are. Happy birthday, are you having a party tonight?"

confused...

"It's not my birthday, so no I'm not"

finally

"Have a good party"

WHAT. THE. DUCK?

Would you have to just sit there and get somebody else to come down?

Back in the good old days when you could buy ciggies at 16
"Yeah, pump no 2 and can I have 20 Royals please"
"Have you got any ID"
"Yes, pump no 2"
"No I need ID"
"Yes, it is pump no 2, you see that is my car, the car that I need to be 17 to legally drive on the road, meaning you know I am at least over the age of 16 to buy some fags"
"Oh yeah"
"So again, pump no 2, and 20 Royals please"

Surely, the fact that you must be 16 or over to ride a moped, or 17 to drive a car, then you are indeed old enough to buy petrol?

If you rocked up in a BMW, pumped a load of petrol, then went to pay and turned out to be 12 years old, I think the fact you're not old enough to pay for petrol is the least of her worries.

Just because you drove over doesn't mean you are over 17 or legal to drive, and they aren't required to check your licence but they do need to prove you are over 16 to buy fags, I can imagine a git at trading standards or whoever polices sales to underage children giving someone a lift and letting them get out of the drivers side.

You also have to be over 16 to dispense fuel, so she really should've checked your age before approving the pump you used if she was that concerned.

Not sure what it is now, but the maximum fine to a garage for allowing people under 16 to dispense fuel was £10k.

You'd think so.

When I was 16 I used to fill my bike up at the local Shell station outside my School. I also used to buy stuff there occasionally, and they all recognised me.

I rode up, full biking gear, fill up with petrol and just as I pay, I ask for a lottery ticket... then she ID's me.
