Classic Insurance for Under 21s?

Not the best weekend for a good car to turn up for sale.. Working all day Friday, Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday. I can't get a chance to get on the phone and call any insurance companies, and by the time I did they were closed.

I'm looking at a 1998 MX5, trying to get insurance for it.. I've been told to look at Classic Insurance. I think alot will ask for 21, or 25+ but some might do under 21s. Footman James came up, but I think the last time I called them they didn't cover Northern Ireland. Again, too late to call them and they'll probably be closed on Monday.

So, to ease my head a little.. Classic Insurance for under 21? Many doing it, if so who?

I was told by the seller that he has it insured on a classic policy.

Doing a bit of reading though, alot of companies seem to specify 15+ years, some 20.

"Classic" policies are not the be all and end all of cheap insurance.

Just ring around some insurance companies and see what sort of prices you get. A MX5 isn't exactly a difficult or expensive car to insure at the best of times!

In most cases when I was searching, it seems that most "classic" policies are now both 30+, and you must own/insure another vehicle (or at least declare that it's not your only vehicle). Not sure if this is the case for all classic policies or if I was just unlucky?

How old are you? If you're 18 you can probably forget about cheaply insuring an MX-5, no matter what policy. Also note that even if you do get a classic policy (which would be unusual, most have 15+ year for age and at least 21 year old for main driver) it will have mileage restrictions etc on it which could make it unsuitable as a daily driver.

the best bet for insurance for under 21 on an MX5 would be the owners club scheme. these tend to cater for your sort of situation. but it will probably still be expensive.

A UK Spec MX5 seems pretty damn cheap to insure to me .

I've insured an MR2 Mk2 for £890 at 21, with 0NCB.

I'm sure they would have quoted less for an MX-5 as they're very similar cars, but with less power and most likely less corner/hedge interactions.

That's with Sky insurance, google it.

Also join the owners club for a load off and they'll also discount for any years of being a named driver and not claiming you might have.
