Irrespective of price, what car would satisfy all of your requirements?
I've pondered this question on a number of occasions, wondering just how little an 'ideal' car could cost. To use my own experiences as examples, I used to own an E46 M3 and I found it a great allrounder. It has four comfy seats, plenty of toys, good build quality, as much performance as I would ever need, and half-decent running costs (25mpg average fuel consumption, fair priced servicing, no expensive faults). It cost me around £17k at about five years old, and I think it represented great value for money...it was as much car as I would ever need.
Then I think on and remember a friend used to own a Renault Clio 172. He bought it from a main dealer as an ex-demo car, with a couple of thousand miles on the clock, for £10k. It was a highly capable car and would often surprise much more expensive machinery in performance stakes. Whilst it suffered from typical french build quality, nothing major ever went wrong with it (and the bits that did go wrong were always covered under warranty). It could seat four in comfort, had a decent boot, and even had styling that I would call 'nice' (subjective I know). I drove it on a number of occasions and I found it a great little car, in many ways better than the much more expensive MINI Cooper S JCW that I had at the time.

Must wear sticky rubber for track days (where I expect it to destroy more expensive machinery)

I haven't found one such vehicle yet, but I refuse to give up!

Subaru Legacy GT-B Estate/Mitsubishi Legnum VR4 estate. Massive boot which is needed, comfortable over distance and if you don't hoon them will get almost average fuel economy.

I'm on a 2nd VR4 Legnum at the moment, and while it is great for most things, and usually quick enough, it isn't exiting to drive, but I've a V8 toy too ...Oh, and they go like s

Can't think of any car I've driven that could be genuinely seat of the pants exciting/involving, yet comfortable and easy to drive/roomy/practical etc.. at the same time...
