Maybe they've told the insurance, just not the dvla yet?
Hmmmm, let's think. They'll tell the insurers who will increase their premium by a lot but not the DVLA who won't charge them anything more than an admin fee. What d'you reckon?
if your talking about Toyota starlets/glanza were most are registered as non turbo's it mainly down to the fact that it's a fight with the dvla or dvlni in my case to get them to record it as a turbo due to the fact that they were never sold in the UK and thus not on the system. In the end mine was down as a 1.3 non turbo on the log book, but I still had it insured as a turbo.

Keep seeing stuff like this on ads, what is the point, surely if you insure it as such your insurance is invalid ?
Don't worry! Anyone who buys a car like this is a driving God, and hence insurance is a waste of time - the only reason to get it is to avoid getting your car impounded by those pesky coppers with their numberplate recognition systems. However, for some totally ridiculous reason (probably a government conspiracy) the insurance companies actually charge MORE if these driving Gods tell them they have a fast car, despite the fact it's clearly safer (innit). Thank goodness there are public-minded citizens fighting the power and selling cars with misrepresented engines.
I've got two friends who do this, now that act of doing it is irritating but not something I'm going to get het up about. It's the "hurr durr not bad for a 1.2" business that pisses me off.
Anyway, many, many people do this, and they don't get caught, they can also quite easily get away with it come insurance claim time, when was the last time your insurance company actually inspected your car for a claim? That isn't idle speculation by the way, one of those friends had a Nova (and of all things you'd expect it in a Nova) with an undeclared engine, had an accident, and got away with it.

That's just the ones being sold. Imagine how many other in circulation haven't informed anyone.
Apart from the non declaration on insurance, is it an offence not to notify the DVLA of an engine swap?

My engine capacity is different to whats on the V5 (increased). Never bothered to tell them, but I've told my insurance company. While not condoning it, I can understand why they don't...insurance renewal is a nightmare for me.

Sure, if you have an accident involving a couple of grand's worth of repairs no problem. But if you're involved in a fatal or one that involves putting someone in medical care for the rest of their lives (which, after all, is what we really pay our insurance for) they will investigate.carl_w said:

Before anyone thinks otherwise, I would never do this - OK.
What I was wondering though is what, if any, checks an insurance company would routinely do in the event of an accident? I can understand the younger driver of a certain demographic might get some additional scrutiny, but what about, say the middle aged guy in a 320d who had taken it up by 20 or 30 bhp and forgotten to mention it - either out of ignorance, or otherwise.
Do insurance companies routinely run engine diagnostics post accident, for instance?
