Mk3 Mondeo 2.2 TDCi, worth the extra over the 2.0?

As per title, to replace my Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI estate, is a used Mk3 Mondeo 2.2 TDCi worth the extra cost over the 2.0?

Does it have significantly more oomph in the real world?
Does it have a broader/narrower powerband?
Is it more/less responsive?

What alternative cars are there?

I'm after:
good, rewarding handling (important)
good fuel consumption
a big boot

IIRC the 2.2 is statistically more likely to have problems with Injectors, etc.

Mine cost me a bloody fortune, anyway! Unless going for the ST, I'd say the 2.0 was good enough and more popular as well. I've not heard of so many reliability issues on the 2.0.

2.2 will average about 45mpg in mixed use.

Hmmm, that doesn't sounds good, although I've heard similar about the 2.0.

Ideally I'd have a Mondeo chassis with a Citroen/Peugeot HDI engine.

I'd thought it to be the other way round - by the time the 2.2's came out, the injector problems were ironed out in the spec?

The 2.0's have a healthy appetite for injectors to my knowledge......

When I had my ST I knew of quite a few people who had new injectors - issues that are still occuring to this day. Not as common as the EGR fault, or the DMF faults, but still they occur none the less (usually around 70k miles!)

I'm sure they are just generally a weak spot on that engine, regardless of CC. When I had my TDCi (with shagged injectors) I had just thought that the general opinion on Fordmondeo.org was that the 2.2 was better. However, not a difficult thing to achieve....

<whispers> As an alternative, is a C-Max 2.0 Diesel(PSA HDI engine?) as good to drive as a Mk3 Mondeo estate?

Ah....Well in my opinion the 2.0 and 2.2 are amost on a par. Obviously the 2.2 will be that little bit quicker but its all about what spec the car is and what kind of car you want. If its the right car and everything checks out go for it but a normal 2.0 wont dissapoint. The usual failures are EGR valves, fuel injectors and Dual Mass Flywheels but not every single unit will suffer a failure. In my opinion they are very good cars and a sensible used car choice.

Having owned a 2.0 myself for almost 3 years, I agree with you. I was just wondering if the 2.2 was worth the extra -It doesn't appear so from the responses so far.

The 2.2 is available in the higher spec cars. My 2.0 is a 'Ghia X' which is well kitted-out.

How much do you want to spend? - I can't really see any point in replacing a MkIII Mondeo with another MkIII Mondeo myself!

Depending on budget, a B6 Passat 2.0TDI is worth a look.

But I'd probably stick with what you already have.

I too am reluctant to buy the same car again, but I can't think of anything that will be an improvement for the budget.

I'm only upgrading because (TOUCH WOOD, CLUTCH LUCK HEATHER AND LUCKY RABBIT FOOT), nothing has gone wrong with my 04 yet. If it was a petrol I'd not be considering swapping.

The Passats I've driven were a bit barge-like, with a funny parking brake.

How about a Mazda 626 estate? Not sure how close to the Mondeo they are, but I think they share a lot of parts?
