Getting private plate back.

Not sure if this is the correct place or not, anyway..

A mate of mine sold his car a while ago with a private plate on it. At the time he wasn't fussed but now he is wondering if he can get it back? He still has the papers but obviously the new owner of the car will have the registration docs etc.

Is this achievable? If so he'll start at the DVLA i suppose.

Unless transferred onto a different car or a retention cert, your friend lost any entitlement to the plate the moment he sold the car . . . . . only way forward is to offer the current owner cash

An update to this. He's apparently one step ahead of himself and the car is now crushed.

Is it gone forever?

I sold my 928 with my private plate on it but made an agreement with the buyer that i'd get the plate back, no panic time wise. Rang the chap up last week and he was fine, i said i'd fill the docs my end and post them to him with the cheque for the DVLA. I'll be getting a retention certificate in the post soon with me as the grantee. Happy days.

I did that, and the bloke fked off with the plate! I had to wait till he sold the car before i got it back

I guess it is. I'm no expert, but if the reg doesn't 'die' with the car there would be issues with cars seemingly coming back to life / cloning.

I think it needs an MOT to make it transferable.

Once DVLA are informed a vehicle has been scrapped the registration number has gone for good,MOT'd or not unfortunately.
