First step in Bangornomics

Pretty much as the title says, with the Pug now on the market I have decided to go down the Bangornomics route to replace it, current favourite to purchase is either a Volvo V40 or S40.

Thoughts?
Things that are handy to know?
Anything else worth considering at a budget of no more than £1k?

What's wrong with the Pug?

Wouldn't step one in Bangernomics be run it into the ground.

Biggest problem with the pug for me is the size of the peddle box and general size full stop, being 6ft 4 and in a pug 206 is not a nice place to be, am having to do more distance stuff with work at the moment and althought the pug is fine for short hops to the office and back, anything over an hour and a half drive though and I'm needing to get myself booked into the chiropracter.

1. 1 choose a very common car that is reliable and easy to work on - you may need to be able to find spares in a scrappy, remember.
2. 2 running costs - remember tax is a sizeable chunk of the annual cost at this 'end of the market'

So? Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen are useful because they don't hold their value well (therefore newer car for the same money, more in scrapyards as they are more likely to be written off for smaller dings). Also, have you driven an old V/S40? I was desperately disappointed and took a Focus instead. Beyond that there's the old argument between petrol and diesel and choosing on condition (mechanical, unless you are intending to sell on, which isn't the point...).

To the OP: My answer to any question relating to bangernomics is "Lexus" followed by "LS400". Try one, you will not be disappointed.

At 6ft 4, yes I am big and angry. I'm also dashing these off on the sly at work so can't put my usual wit and feeling behind them (typically I would have been laughing my arse off at the error myself, lets just say tiday is not a good day and biting of heads off was not my actual intention)
